What can your standard stock tyres take?

I read through a lot of the replacement tyre thread but didn't see many posts on the actual performance of the standard stock tyres BEFORE replacement emoticon

My T31 came with Dunlop ST20 Grandtrek, an onroad tyre with some offroad cap. if I can believe the internet emoticon If they are ready for replacement I will get something with a more offroad capability.

I drove around on gravel roads and they performed fine although I was a bit waiting on a slasher. Now that can always happen with the best of tyres I guess.

Who's got some more offroad experiences with their standard stock tyres and would like the bad and the good?

Stock tyres are only good for beach/sand driving in an off-road situation and that's about it in terms of their capability. I won't risk going off-road with stock tyres if the terrain is rocky and they'll slide all over the place in muddy situations with no traction.

Not to mention that the stock tyres (at least the Toyo's on the T30 ST) have virtually no puncture resistance - we got a flat on our first off-roading trip, and it was just an ordinary unsealed road emoticon

Re: What can your standard stock tyres take?

I have taken my tyres on some reasonably rough terrain that I thought might shred them a little but they held up perfectly. It was dry so no slip and slide.

Previoulsy in the wet I was surprised in the difference between a mudder and a AT tyre, a road tread might as well be a slick in those situations and definately not real safe in the slimey stuff.

I am hoping that I encounter some wet offroad trails on my next trip so I can show the wife why the standard tyres are useless for the trips we are looking to take if the weather is not perfect. Then it will be time for second set of wheels with some AT or Mud tyres. (if I can get muds in the correct size that is)

Re: What can your standard stock tyres take?

We have the standard Dunlop ST20 tyres and they have done a great job in surviving this long (33,000 kms). This is the reason why they need replacement.

We haven't done any beach work but we have taken our tyres pretty much where we wanted to go - mud, gravel, rocky sections and even through sections we thought we should not have gone.

Real muddy sections have been a little challenging but we never thought we could not do it.

We've never had any trouble with punctures but on two occasions we have blown the side wall out on real sharp rocky shelves but you will get that with any tyre. (The latest was last weekend.) I think this is probably very good for a highway tyre in these conditions.

We're hunting for some new tyres at the moment and have spoken to some tyre places about our options. There's not much in the 215/60/17 range as they are only for highway driving. I've had some good suggestions from members here on the forum in reply to my thread about replacement tyres and will be looking for something that is more suitable for off road as this is were we are every weekend.

Some may think I am over-cautious when navigating my way through rough terrain but I am conscious that the tyres are not meant to do what I am asking of them. There are always rocks and sticks that could puncture the sides so I think it's better to take it gently and protect the tyres if I can.

All in all, I think you could use the standard tyres anywhere if you are sensible and remember that they are meant for highway.

Regards Scot emoticon

Re: What can your standard stock tyres take?

G'day Scot

I understand your hesitation and questions. We too are looking at replacing the standards, particularly in light of our upcoming central aust trip (and the fact that the Plenty Highway has a reputation of puncturing tyres emoticon ). However, I agree with Jalal and Rich. No matter how careful and cautious a driver you may be, there is always the off-chance that something sinister is hidden from your view.

Yesterday, I spoke to Russ from Goodyear Tyres Sumner Park (PM me if you'd like the phone number) and asked about Cooper ATR's as replacements. Russ basically told me that the only suitable Cooper's in the ATR style that would adequately fit the T31's 17inch rims is the 235/60 R17.

I have chosen to go with the Coopers (over my original choice - BFG's) because they offer an up to 90,000 km mileage guarantee and the side walls are reportedly stronger. The Cooper's are by no means cheap ($319 per tyre - fitted & balanced) but vehicle and passenger safety are paramount.

I hope this helps you in your decision when choosing your next set of tyres.

Hi Guys,

Please limit your answers to direct feedback about stock factory tyres that came with your car as this is the topic of this thread. Tyre brands and alternatives are to be discussed in the existing tyre replacement thread to help us avoid creating yet another duplicate thread for the same subject.

Re: What can your standard stock tyres take?

I'll second Scot in that if you're careful then the stock ST20's do OK. I've driven accross rocky sections, a little sand and even some good steep hills (up and down) and not had a real problem with them. That said, I'm usually very cautious on "trickier" sections, more worried about the car through my lack of 4WD experience and the fact that I'm out on my own than for fear of the tyres though.

The two reasons I want AT's are:
1) For when it's wet. I totally avoid wet tracks with stock tyres. A little puddle or small section of mud to play in (such as on O'Reilly's over Xmas) is fine but if there's been a lot of rain in the area then I don't go as I have serious reservations as to how far raod tyres would get.
2) Tyre wear. The ST20's will do 30000km, 40000km if you're really careful, though if you intend using them off road then I think you'd need to change them at 30000km anyway as bearly legal road tyres are effectively slicks off road. A good AT tyre should get 70000km, maybe more depending on the tyre and the car.

So, for someone who wants to spend time off road it's a no brainer. More Km for about the same money and better/safer off-road performance. Oh, and they look better as well! I'll certainly be putting AT's on mine when the ST20's are finished........counting down the km's already!

Re: What can your standard stock tyres take?

Hi,

I have just done the Bridle Track to Hill End (very rocky) and then the main sealed/dirt road between Hill End and Sofala using the stock T31 ST Bridgestones. Got a flat at the very end of the dirt on arrival at Sofala so I couldn't risk continuing on to Capertee. Can't see anything wrong with the tyre externally so I'm awaiting the results from the repairer, but I don't have much faith in those tyres for offroading. Next time I'd want another spare.

BTW, do these tyres come stock with tubes?

Cheers

You must've hit the same rock I did almost 5 years ago!!! That's exactly where we got the flat as mentioned earlier in this thread! LOL!!! We could hear the air hissing out of the tyre just as we got out of the car to relax at the cafe, and I turned around and watched the tyre go completely flat in a matter of seconds... The constant speed must've kept it mostly inflated while we were travelling along the unsealed road, or we got the puncture just as we arrived at Sofala.
