Re: Sunglasses holders

If it was a TI or TL it would already have a sunglasses holder. Status will be updated soon.

posticon Re: Sunglasses holders

I would advise against attempting this Modification (on an ST or ST-L like my model: T31 2008 build)

I went ahead and purchased the Sunglass Holder Assembly ($30, 2 weeks from Japan) thinking it would either just snap in or would need the roof lining to be cut to have a bigger opening then it would just fit OK (maybe with a bit of a fiddle).

WRONG

First - after removing the light assembly there remains the plastic surround that fits flush to the roof lining. This fitting is a one time fit because there are some 5 or 6 "push on nuts" that locate it onto the roof ling and cannot be removed easily without breaking the plastic posts they push onto - even IF you could reach them which you can't!!!.
ie if anyone knows a way of removing this surround please let us know. The ESM says to refit it, it is best to do it before replacing the Whole Roof Lining!!!

Second - the metal locating clips on the same plastic surround towards the front of the car that locate in a metal bracket are in a much more forward position on the new sunglass holder assembly. The problem is that the metal bracket they locate in seems fixed to the roof of the car and can't be located more forward to suit the new surround.

If all these problems are overcome there is still the need to cut the roof lining and also to push on the bayonet washers over the plastic posts (which are unreachable anyway) on the new surround.

Should any of the above fail to be achieved you then have a large hole in your nice roof lining and have thereby ruined it.

Image

Just a heads up on what could be a nasty outcome.

If I'm wrong with any of the above it would be good to know as I would LOVE to fit my new sunglasses holder assembly.

Could be open to offers emoticon

Re: Sunglasses holders

All I can say is I am glad I waited to see how things went with what sounded like a cheap and easy improvement. Hope you can recover from the trial without too much trouble / expense.

True Tony, I actually always seem to forget about the sunnies holder in my Ti, as getting them out of the front glovebox seems to be easier for me....maybe because am used to getting them from there from my T30 days. emoticon

Re: Sunglasses holders

For those still trying to imagine what the item looks like, here are some images.

As you can see, it requires a larger ceiling cutout than the regular light fitting.

The actual map light component still slips into the vacant area.

You can also see the 2 Metal Clips on the top side of the actual sunglass area. In the smaller regular mount these clips are over the map light section and have a metal bracket there (mounted on the metal roof of the car) instead of further forward for this larger unit - this metal bracket could be the "Show Stopper".

After you click on a thumbnail you can click on the left and right arrows in Photobucket to see all the photos I took.

Also visible are the 6 small plastic "posts" around the top edge that have the "push on nuts" fitted there by firmly attaching the unit to the roof lining.

I tried to remove the one I could actually see and reach and couldn't budge it.

You need to use a "Dentists Mirror" and a torch to see what is up in the ceiling (recommended if you want to have a go).

There you go - It's a nice unit (could be on ebay soon!!) BUT!!!
