engine cuts out when idling

Hi,I had a fast idle problem, and my engine cut out twice when i was slowing down ,but started straight away.I took my vechicle to a dealer who adjusted my idle and checked for fault codes. No faults showed up.I was told that i had a crack around the o2 sensor boss that i got welded and that fixed it.My engine cut out again on saturday while i was driving slowly accross a paddock,,no fault came up and started first pop.I have now changed the plugs.Old plugs iridium appeared to be the right colour and should of had 20,000ks to go before they required changing. was told by the dealer that on two vechicles they had a ignition sensor fault and syptoms like mine.Question which sensor fires my ignition coils.Crankshaft position sensor pos or camshaft position sensor phase. Was told should change both if fault keeps going on.The vechicle drives very well, and just looking at these sensors it appears they are not hard to change, and if the x-trail stops again i would take a punt and change the one that fires my coils, and they are $56 each.Any suggestions merry xmas and cheers Vechicle is going alright with new bosh platinium plugs from supercheap.

Hi Ray,

If it was any of the sensors at fault, the ECU would have recorded a fault code against them.

Have you changed your fuel filter or has the dealer inspected it at all?

Re: engine cuts out when idling

No have not changed fuel filter,as dealer is too busy before xmas.Do not believe it to be fuel as engine runs fine on the highway at full power, and acceleration. This time i was going accross a flat paddock at very slow speed for some distance accross a bumpy surface and engine stopped.Started straight away and i then kept going and later i drove home some distance ie 150ks or so with out any problems.I asked a tuning so called expert and he said more than likely a crank sensor fault, but i said no faults in computor,he said some times this happens with out recording it,which i find hard to believe, also dealer mechanic said more than likely sensor fault, but no fault recordered.Up to three months ago my exy had never stalled at all no matter where i drove it,or how i drove it.Any way does anybody know which sensor fires the coils,i would guess the crank sensor, and if i remember rightly this was a re call on exy/s overseas.cheers I am getting to the stage i feel like burning it,only joking but i now have to do about 1000ks over xmas in a vechicle that i have little faith in,but i might be getting worked up for nothing.cheers

I think so Ray, as you have said that there are no problems starting, normal driving or highway driving and full power, just the occasional irritation of an odd stoppage on rough slow running.

Re: engine cuts out when idling

Hi,Kev,i have just done over a 1000Ks and the exy just went fine,no stalling or anything, and good fuel economy.I give up,,but i did fit a new set of plugs, before i went away(bosch platinum plus P11-4 from supercheap),but the ones i had in it Iridiums had only done 30000Ks,they were Nippon denso/s that i imported from america some time ago. i might just keep driving it,as my mate said his jackeroo has stalled a few times lately using E10 sugar fuel, which i do not use,He thinks it is the fuel even with mine as he thinks the batches are a little bit different lately. The engine has always been quite smooth on idle and really never rough so i guess i will see what happens.cheers

Re: engine cuts out when idling

It would be the computer that would fire the plugs. It would take readings from all the sensors & fire the plugs at the appropriate time, so unless a sensor is faulty I don't think changing one would make a difference.

Re: engine cuts out when idling

I have to disagree, the computer will input a firing signal and a fault can still exist in the plug. I removed the Irridium plugs and am running standard NGK, after chasing an irregular idle fault a while ago. None of the plugs appeared faulty, and no fault code was displayed. The car did not recognise a slight misfire at all, however the misfire/ uneven idle (very rarely, but apparent)is gone.
Am happy to clean/change plugs when required at servicing. That was just my experience. emoticon

Re: engine cuts out when idling

Engine cut out again again saturday afternoon pulling up in traffic at about 30kph.Engine was reluctant to start, but fired ,would not rev then cut out. After cranking it for about 10-15 seconds, engine fired, ran rough then went ok.Took it into Wights nissan and mechanic said all symptions leading to crank sensor or cam sensor as he had replaced faulty ones in the past.i said what about fuel,he said no and had never had a pump or filter problem and symptions suggesting other wise.No faults in computor check, but mechanic said they had a faulty crank sensor that did not log on the computer on one vechicle. So i am going to spend some of Rudds money and get both sensors changed tomorrow, and i suppose this is a punt to some extent, but i am getting sick of having a vechicle that i do not have much faith in,and it is time to try some thing.I am hoping.cheers PS i have stopped and started the exy about 20 times since saturday and the damn thing is running very smooth. The joys of motoring.Had a look where the crank engine sensor is located, and will be differcult to get at,and mechanic said have to remove air cleaner and lean over the top of the engine to reach it and sometimes the o ring makes it stick in and can be a little tricky.

Good luck - the problem with faults such as these, they sometimes end up being a process of trial and elimination.

How old is the vehicle because I have had similar issues with electric fuel pumps - as if you needed another variable to worry about!
