Andrew,
Towards the rear of the car when you are standing behind it. Usually they're hard to take-off the first time but it will be easier to come off after that due to these pins that get slotted into the body of the car.

I completed this mod yesterday in about 2 hours and less than $10!!
To remove the filings I used the vacuum cleaner as the air gets sucked in the other globe housing holes.

Mine didn't leak, even after ramming the hose with full pressure between the tailgate and the light, and I used no silicon.
For a couple of bucks for the sockets, can't go wrong.
Keep in mind the lights you buy from the wreckers will have thick plastic where the bulb socket is, where you have to drill the X Trail light is only a couple on mm thick.
