posticon T31 extra brake/tail lights

OK guys here we go………

I did this in a couple of hours (taking my time) and the cost, well, under $10.00.
Image
I didn't use the white connectors because I found that they cut the wires in half.

1) Remove tail light from body by 2x1omm bolts clearly visable when the tailgate is opened and then unscrew all the bulbs.

2) I drilled a 25mm hole in the underside of the top lens (drill a test hole in a plastic pot plant or similar first).
If you drill in the obvious place in the lens, the back, it will hit the body of the car when you fit the tail light back on.
Image

3) Test fit bulb holder to back of tail light first before soldering the wires together. You will have to file a couple of slots opposite each other for the holder to fit, see pic.
Image

4) Tap into the wiring harness as close as possible to the top.

WIRE CODES

LIVE ------green with a white trace
NEUTRAL----green with a yellow trace
EARTH----black

5) Also take note that when you drill into the light, pieces of the plastic will go into the lens. I used compressed air to clean out the lens, works a treat.

6) Solder wires together and tape up.

7) Re-install taillight back on car and your done.

  That’s it.
   Enjoy emoticon

Am proud of you Tony emoticon

Well done mate, but I have a couple of tips to mention:

1. When drilling the tail light, drill it on a high bench so the opening is facing down. That way you can avoid any of the drilled plastic bits going into the tail light lens.

2. Use the black gluey stuff (not sure what it is called) the one that looks like road asphalt and seal around the bulb holder to water proof it, as water does flow behind the tail light coming down from the roof of the car.

3. Finally and it is a personal choice, use LED bulbs that are much brighter. You can find them in standard bayonet size (like THESE)

I can give you these LED bulbs to you when you come around next time as they didn't fit my wife's Tiida tail light and I have no use for them.

Re: T31 extra brake/tail lights

I never thought of the LED bulbs.
Also when drilling, you have to hold the light firmly and drill at the same time. A little tricky using a spade bit, otherwise, well, you don't want the drill to slip, do you.

The only problem with sealing around the holder is if the bulb blows, it's harder to get it out.
I also used 3 little dabs of silicone around the base of the holder to ensure it doesn't fall out. Even though the holders twist lock in.

Overall, very happy with the job for such little money.

Re: T31 extra brake/tail lights

I'm going to do this mod on my T31, Tony's looks awesome.
Tony - Silly question but are the existing tail light globes standard bayonet fittings ie the same as the ones you put in? Ill replace all the globes with LED at the same time.

Cheers, Ill post some pics when done, well either that or be looking for a new set of tail light assemblies.

I have some of that Gasket Goo, its good stuff.

Cheers,

-Dronus

Dronus
The globes I brought are standard bayonet fittings (see pic No.1), it didn't cross my mind at the time to get LEDs but that is easy fixed.
The standard Exy globes are the push in wedge type, I'm not too sure if you can get them in LED.

One other thing I forgot to mention, you'll have to shave a little off the bulb holder lugs that make it screw in, due to the thickness of the plastic of the tail light.
Have fun
Tony

Just wondering if you got a chance to do this mod yet.
It will be good to see comparison pics of standard to LED globes when you get around to it.
Cheers

Re: T31 extra brake/tail lights

Hi Tony,

If you did not want to use the goo as Jalal described, maybe you could get a standard rubber grommet and use it to mount the globe holder in a slightly larger hole with the inside grommet rubber web being used to seal around the globe holder ?

Kev,

The holder won't lock in place if you use the rubber grommet inside the hole.
