Anyone been to the Kimberleys?

Hi all,

We are planning a trip in May from Adelaide through the centre and up to the Kimberleys (and back of course).

Was wondering if anyone has been up there? I am looking for any advice and comments. Particularly interested in how the exy will handle river crossings?

We are going to tak our camper trailer.

Any thoughts?

Hi Michael & Elizabeth ,
I personally have not been there at all and can offer no advice but if you look at a trip that loafer is doing it may help with what to pack and have along in the car.

Re: Anyone been to the Kimberleys?

I did it in 1992 in some Hi-Lux type thing. The Gibb River Road is fine for the exy, my sister did in a Comodore with caravan (just go slower than a more sturdy 4WD as it can be quite rough, depending on when it was graded). We also went to Kalumburu and Mitchel Plateau. I think there was only one section (100m, on the road to Mitchel Plateau, I think) that the exy would not do because of ground clearance (but of course it could be better now). I don't remember much water (it was June and almost every day was 26-29C and sunny). I have one picture of the Ivanhoe Crossing (which is concrete - on top of a weir) and the water was up to the bottom of the bumperbar.

It's worth checking it out on Google Earth - one rainy day when I had nothing better to do, I took myself on a virtual trip. It can take quite a while. emoticon emoticon

Re: Anyone been to the Kimberleys?

We'll see you there!!

Except we are going in the opposite direction. This because we are starting in April, and don't want to get to the Kimberley before May.

Look out for a white 2008 Xtrail from Victoria.

ps have you seen the site www.kimberleyaustralia.com

It has a whole lot of info on roads etc.

Michael & Elizabeth
There is a set of Outback drawers going on ebay at the moment very cheap, $120.00 with 3 days to go.
These will be a definate essential for your Kimberly trip.
Never seen them for an Exy before, they must be the first prototype.
