Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Hi all,

I have not had anyone get back to me from my Perth Nissan dealership about this problem. I think they may have forgotten about my query.

Regardless my father and I took the bumper off again earlier this week to try and troubleshoot what is causing the alignment problem.

Once we had the bumper and examined it we could see that something is definitely touching the black plastic moulding on the inside of the bumper and forcing it up as there was a small deformation to the edge of the moulding.

When looking at the corresponding position on the mounted towbar we could see that it appears to be the area where the RHS sidearm/sidearm bracket and towbar bolt together. The top angle of this section is less than the LHS side which is more acute and does not cause any problem (i.e. it does not touch the inside of the bumper).

Basically the RHS and LHS sidearm brackets have completely different shapes/angles. The RHS is catching on the bumper. This then deforms the bumper in that local area which causes the RHS misalignment but still allows the bumper to be re-fitted and line up with all mounting brackets and holes.

So it would appear in some previous posts where members have advised by Nissan or dealers that some plastic has been removed to attempt a fix and realign this would appear to be the case.

In our case we did remove a small amount of plastic to try to rectify. After this the bumper still appears misaligned but it is difficult to tell if we need to remove more plastic or that the bumper is still holding deformation memory and will correct (especially if in left in the sun for a while for example).

Would love to know if Nissan can let us know once and for all what the correct actual fix is instead of all their customers having to work it out for themselves.

I do have some photos illustrating the above and will try to post when I get a chance.

Car's great but this is very annoying. emoticon

Re:

Hi Paul,

Thanks for trying to find the cause and fix for this defect and it is in fact a defect caused by the lack of testing on Nissan's behalf when they developed the towbar.

I would like you and all other T31 x-trail owners with a Nissan towbar to highlight this defect to Nissan Australia via their Facebook X-TRAIL page (found HERE) as I posted this problem on their facebook page and they are saying that the towbar will not cause this mis-alignment. They are not offering any fix solutions either, so when they get more complaints about it, maybe they will get the right people to respond to us.

P.S. The dealers have no idea either and are at a complete loss as to how to fix this.

Cheers,

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Finally had some down time today to take the photo's of the issue I am having with the rubbing of my tail gate!

I know mine is not a Nissan genuine but this should not happen in any case!

Since I have had it fitted the reverse light is now popping out as the bumper twist around it!Image

The next few show the area the tailgate is now rubbing against!

As per discussion on poor design of the bumper, this will happen no matter what tow bar you fit!

Regards Scot

Wow Scot, I reckon it is even worse with your type of towbar, as I haven't got any of those rub marks on my bumper or the tailgate and my wife is opening the tailgate almost everyday during her shopping.

Yes it is a poor state of affairs indeed and I am tired of patching paint work due to faulty things on the x-trail, it is lucky I love the car otherwise I would strongly warn others about the cars defects!

Regards Scot

Re:

Thats a fair way out Scot.
It's a little different to every one elses problem as your bumper must be higher on one side than the other, not just left to right.

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Hi Tony,

From what I worked out when we removed the bumper to troubleshoot the problem with the misalignment is not really left to right (and I stand to be corrected when Nissan finally advise what is the real problem). I think it is actually the RHS sidearm assy lifting the bumper up through internal contact on the right side closing the gap between the the bumper and the tailgate. This causes the panel bumper/tailgate misalignment.

There is some variance in how bad cars are affected....Scot's seems particularly bad. But pretty much all T31's I have seen with a tow bar show some misalignment (unless the dealer or tow bar company that fitted it has cobbled together a solution).

Cheers,

Paul.

Re:

I guess I was lucky as my T31 was only out 2mm from left to right. Up and down was spot on.
It had a genuine bar fitted by the dealer.
