Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

I received my USB snake endoscope camera today and so have completed some further investigation.

When I originally had a look under the XTrail I must have been trying to get to see the brackets as today I realised that you can see quite a bit without the snake camera.

It did however make it easier to get some pictures.

One initial observation was that if you look from under the vehicle facing the rear on the side of the muffler you can see the towbar bracket above where the muffler is located. I noticed that the bumper plastic had a slight bump that indicated the bumper was hard up against the towbar bracket. The mounting bracket is physically preventing the bumper moving any higher on the muffler side.

Having purchased the camera I attempted to get some internal pictures to add to the evidence and eventually got a few pictures confirming what I had observed from outside the bumper. A number of the pictures are similar but I have made them all available in case somebody can see something clearer in one than another.

Harder to see but picture of the towbar mounting bracket from just in front of the bumper. The section near the leg is actually the plastic bumper and the section going off towards the right top are the towbar brackets. As you can see the bumper is hard up on the bracket.

Clearer picture of the above.

The following are various snapshots from the inside showing the bumper hard up on the towbar bracket.

If you get down and have a look at the bumper from underneath the vehicle just above where the exhaust passes under the bumper you will be able to see the towbar bracket. My bumper has small downward bump in the plastic where it has been pushed up against the towbar bracket. If you push the plastic bumper you should notice that is hard up against the towbar bracket.

It was a little hard to tell if the main towbar cross member was causing any problems but based on the above information the two towbar brackets are definitely hard down on the bumber and preventing it from being correctly prositioned.

I haven't heard from my Nissan Dealer since the last Nissan Fix attempt but will send these latest pictures so they can send them to Nissan as further evidence.

If any of the pictures are confusing please let me know and I will try and explain them a bit better.

There doesn't appear much space between the top of the reversing lights and the towbar cross section but from what I could see they weren't actually touching. I didn't capture any pictures of this but if needed can have another look.

JOhn,
A comparison pic of the right and left mounting brackets and their respective positions in regards to the bumper might better show any effects

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

I just took a series of pictures of the right side and they looked ok on the camera but have all ended up too dark so I will try again later but here is the finding from the latest exploration.

The right side bumper is also pressed up against the bumper but I also took a closer look at the reversing lights clearance and bad news their surround is pushed hard up against the bottom of the cross section of the towbar.

So my take on the situation is that that they have a few issues to overcome. It is almost like the complete towbar needs to be moved up to allow clearance between the bumper and the bottom of the mounting brackets as well as between the top of the reversing lights surround and the towbar cross section.

I sent the first series of pictures to my Nissan dealer and phoned him to discuss. He informed me that he has attached them to my case file in the Nissan system.

I will send him an email with the latest update on the reversing lights clearance.

I have lightened up the pictures to give you an idea of what I have observed.

Right side bracket with bumper shown pushed up against it.

On an angle due to camera but bottom left corner of the following pictures is the top.

Reversing light shown pushed up against the towbar cross section.

Image

I pushed down on the bumper to demonstrate what a gap between the bumper and the towbar cross section would look like.

Wouldn't it be so easy if we had the ability to talk to somebody directly.

I have also sent these latest pictures to the service manager at my Nissan dealer.

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Hi Guys
Do you think the bumper misalignment could be causing my genuine Nissan reverse sensors to be incredibly erratic?
I have had the 'brain' of the sensors replaced but they now think it has something to do with the genuine tow bar .. Any thoughts?

Re:

I doubt it Morgan, please refer to the existing thread HERE discussing the possible causes for the erratic behaviour of the reverse sensors.

After discovering the cause of the dark pictures we completed another exploration this morning and the following are the pictures. This time we even tried to rotate the camera to save you standing on your heads to view them emoticon

Sorry if I appear to have flooded you with so many pictures but wanted to share the information with you all.

Re:

Called the Nissan Australia Service line and was informed that there is no "Field Quality Improvement - After Sales Division" in Australia and the only way to report any problem is via your local dealer.

Contacted my dealer and they reported that they can only enter items into the computer system and are also frustrated by the Nissan Support system.

If Nissan Australia spent a bit more time fixing their products instead of running Facebook competitions then they may have happier customers.

Has anybody with a Hayman Reese fitted towbar had any recent feedback?

Re:

John,

Send an email to this Nissan Australia email address ([email protected]) and CC your dealer (ask them for their email as well). Include all your photos and mention to them that the matter directly relates to Service Technical Bulletin Number: BT11-002

Also, making a post on the Nissan Australia page maybe wasn't a good idea, as the matter is actually documented on their Nissan X-Trail Australia facebook page and cam be found HERE. This is where you can post a follow-up.

Hi Jalal,

Thanks mate. Looks like I got the wrong Facebook page emoticon New to Facebook as mentioned. Checked the link and it looks a bit more promising. Just off to the optometrist for a checkup...don't think I can use it as an excuse though LOL

I will try again when I get home.
