Re: T31 bash plates (Full Undercarriage Protection Set)

Just wanted to post this information which most of you (and especially those of you who already experienced undercarriage damage) may already know:

A quick calculation of the cost to replace any of the major undercarriage components will show you the true value of the bash plates:

• The approximate cost to replace the front Oil Sump is $2,200 (parts only)
• The approximate cost to replace the rear Differential is $4,500 (parts only)
• The approximate cost to replace the Rear Bumper is $900.00 (parts only)

That’s close to $7,500 just for 3 components of your car not including labour to fit them.

The full undercarriage protection and the bash plates will make sure these expensive components are fully protected and will replace the pathetic plastic guards that are there at the moment.

Re: Replacing undercarriage protection

Hi All
Am wondering how long the protection set is good for. Know it obviously depends on the damage they sustain, but will the service people tell me if there is an issue? You know I am not mechanically adept and even with a lift can't manage to see clearly under the car, and even if I did, wouldn't know what was a serious "ding" over a vital component over and what is expected.
Should I ask at each service and then should I believe them? (Such a Doubting Thomasina I am).

Hi Gail,

As you stated correctly, the bash plates can withstand a reasonable knock but they're not built or designed to be bullet proof for sure.

The service guys will almost never tell you about anything they see under the car until it is too late or is causing the car to behave differently.

Re: T31 bash plates (Full Undercarriage Protection Set)

Hi everybody,

From reading most of the threads here it seems that this topic has evolved into how to fit up the bash plates offered through the Xtrail site. For those of you who like to tinker and have wallets tighter than a duck's bum, here is my own attempt. I've used 3mm steel, which is overkill but its what the scrap yard had on hand. To get the bends I've scored the steel to about half thickness with an angle grinder and taken to it with a sledge hammer to bend it. I put a few welds back along the bend to restrengthen the bend but at such thickness its probably not really needed. Anyway, just wanted to remind people that DIY is still possible with minimal tools. Just like 4x4 can be achieved in little 4x4's (Exxies) emoticon

Re:

once I get my trail out of the shop would it be okay taking it up the beach without a bash plate? I understand rough inland tracks it would be wise to have a bash plate before attempting them but just for a beach drive it should be fine without one for now
? Thanks

Re:

The rear bumper acts as a scoop especially if the beach exit is rough can can rip off. To prevent the bumper from ripping you'll need the rear bash plate to tuck it in. Don't know any other effective ways of tucking the bumper. Lots of documented incidents in the earlier posts in this thread.

Re:

Unless the beach is super smooth and the ruts are not too deep you'd be OK. Over here in WA just about every track that leads anywhere has been chomped out by someone in a 4in lifted 35in tyred Crusier or Patrol, so its almost a guarantee that the back will scoop sand. I wrecked mine on the beach like many before me. Luckily a guy glanced my already broken bumper during and accident with another vehicle. When I got out and realised that I was going to get a new bumper at someone else's expense, I couldn't stop smiling. The fella probably thought I was crazy

Re:

Thanks for the information. Also I was thinking of lifting it by 2 inches though my father reckons it should be fine and wouldnt waste money on it as it is only a soft roader? But From what I've read on this forum the xtrail is pretty capable of going most places provided the right mods.

He is a Landy owner for you he doesn't need to raise his series 2 it's high enough standard

Re:

Look at the suspension lift thread for options. With the right mods, the exy goes to a lot of places. Have a look at the other threads.
