Re: T31 M9R diesel oil
New oil will turn black fairly quickly so I wouldn't be too concerned there. What was the level like on the dipstick?

At the top, pretty much where I remembered it. But thin when I squeezed it, like water.

So I have a written response from the service manager who tells me the Magnatec 10w30 on the docket was a misprint and the oil used is Nissan 5w30 which sounds right. But what a balls up. He assures me that the oil has been changed and it goes black very quickly. I suppose I have to accept that. And the oil on the air filter element is "usual for diesel Xtrails". Change the element? Not required.
When I look at what is listed as actually being done (as opposed to things being "checked" and "looked at") at the 10k service I just paid $200 for an oil and filter change.

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil
Did you question the price of the oil? Get a price per L and compare to what you were charged. If what he is saying is true then you probably have just saved a few $$.

True. I will question the litre price during the next conversation, the one about guaranteeing the oily air filter business will be on their heads.

I gets worse. After I posted the above I went and had a look at the engine. The oil on the stick is as black and as thin as it was before the service! Not able to check the oil filter for signs of removal though. Yesterday I sent a rather terse email to the service manager and am now waiting for his reply. Isn't Magnatec oil green?
Phil,
Engine oil in diesel engines goes black pretty quickly. It happens to all of them. Take comfort in the fact that it is normal!
I only just caught up with the threads and glad you re-checked the oil type they put into your car because unless it meets ACEA C3 requirements, and is fully synthetic, then it is not suitable oil.
If the CAstrol Magnatec oil they used was this stuff then it would have been ok as the bottle depicted here is suitable for DPF-fitted diesel engines.
I always service my car through a Nissan dealer but I also always make a habit of finding out what kind of oil they are putting in the car. Just to be sure, to be sure...

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil
Yes this business has made me pretty gun shy about dealers servicing procedures. I have had a follow up email when I complained about the oil on the filter and when was it due to be changed. 40,000k he says. And when it comes in he will personally inspect the car. Can't wait for that life changing event! And in the meantime another email from Customer Care at the dealership asking me how happy I must be to have had my car serviced by them!!!

Oil on the air filter is pretty normal too. There is a very very long thread about this in the "Diesel Xtrail" section, right at the top. While some will tell you it isn't normal and have gone to all sorts of lengths to try stop it, the reality is that many Euro diesels spit a small amount of oil onto the air filter and it does no harm to the car, despite what some might say. There is no evidence to suggest that any engine has failed as a result of a bit of oil on the air filter. So I wouldn't worry about it. It too is normal.

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil
Engine failures no, turbo failures yes. Heaps of Euro diesels are having inlet manifold and turbo issues due to this oil being sprayed through the air system. Maintenance (cleaning the turbo and inlet manifold) can help delay it but it will happen eventually.
