Re: Buzzing
Yep as suggested the buzzing sound is the electric water pump. Found it changing the oil yesterday, it is just to the rear of the sump. It runs a preset time, dependant on engine temp. It is used to prevent heat soak from the turbo's turbine cooking the oil in the turbine. This can lead to micro diamonds forming ont he turbos bearings, and early failure of the turbo bearing and seals. A very clever set up, probably brought about by warranty issues.
Roughy, your Nissan Dealer is either having a lend or you or doesn't know about these engines. Yes the coolant is circulated, but as described above. Every thing else he said is wrong. There is no coolant travelling through the intercooler it is an air to air type. The fuel pump is mechanically driven and is not able to return the diesel fuel to the fuel tank, and why would it? There is no such thing as vapour lock in a diesel, it has a common rail that is operating at 16000psi it is boarding on hydraulic lock.
Sorry, not meaning to thread dig, but just correcting factual errors.

Exceptional reply....I own a T30 (petrol) but you explained the T31 buzzing noise in one paragraph (love it, in case I ever run across it)

Just explained 2 of the most common misconceptions...intercoolers and vapour lock. Great stuff D.
Edit....sorry missed this an informative AND technical post

Hi Dave,
Nissan stated that there is coolant running through the turbo system using that pump, so maybe the T31 diesel set-up is a bit different to others?
I have previously received the following reply from Nissan:
quote:
Hi Jalal,
There is a pump on these vehicles that pumps coolant through to turbo system on the T31 diesels.
The work shop is certain it runs after the vehicle is switched of but there is no separate thermostat controlling its operation.
The pump is linked into the standard cooling system so the only thermostat in the system is the one for the engine.

Re: Buzzing noise after shutting down the engine?
G'day Guys and Gals
Yes - Dieseldave is correct
Now on another associated point - Observe the location of this little pump, It is at the bottom of the engine bay fixed on the cross member frame right where the stones, rocks and other assorted hazards can hit it. If it gets damaged or broken in any way you will probably come to a halt due to coolant loss
Moral of this post - If you are going off road FIT A BASH PLATE
Cheers Joe
