Re:

Hi guys,
Guess what, there is talk about NEW LAWS for 2014 regarding tyre sizes, might be in our favour this time.

The below quote is taken from 4WD TV's Facebook page.

"Fantastic News Suspension and Tyre Freaks!!!

All Australian Federal and State vehicle registration authorities are meeting in March 2014 to review the "LS" section of NCOP (National Code of Practice - aka VSB-14), which provides the guidelines and standards for the modification of suspension and steering on light vehicles.

The "LS - Suspension and Steering" section of NCOP is one of the most controversial of all NCOP sections, as it dictates to many motoring enthusiast communities what they can and can't do when looking to raise or lower their vehicles, and the types and sizes of tyres which can also be fitted. Additionally, the current suspension laws are written as a "one size fits all" standard and can actually restrict what some vehicle owners are allowed to safely do, whilst making other vehicles unsafe.

After the March 2014 meeting with all the state and territory regulatory authorities, the details of the meeting and planned changes will be taken back to each state registration authority, and put out to public and industry review for a three month period, before the next follow up meeting mid-2014.

This is the best opportunity for all suspension and tyre industry companies, representatives, motoring enthusiasts and vehicle clubs to come together, and help shape the future specifications of these modification standards.

Get involved and have your say on vehicle modification standards.

Yeah... ACT is still clinging onto VSB14.

VSI6 seems to be a NSW thing yeah? Or is it applicable in other states?

Some people tell me VIC have adopted it too but I'm not gonna follow that one up.

Tony, I don't think VSB14 is really relevant to us in NSW anymore? VSI6 has superceded it here. Maybe the rest of the states are going to adopt it too?

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

emoticon HI everyone, I got some real big boots today, 16" X 7.5" CSA Shakers, powdercoated yellow, fitted with 16" 235 70 BFG KM2s MUD TERRAIN boots.

Now over to Dad for the rundown.

Hi folks, this was a major decision to fit these, 1 they are only just legal under the new 7% ruling, 4mm under, 2 they are extremely noisy, major sound proofing will be required, 3 they do take the edge off of acceleration, and are a touch harder to stop, a stock petrol EXY wouldn't like them at all and a stock diesel will be struggling a bit, I've chipped Augustus and fitted a Hi Tech Mufflers Cat back, he handles them OK. 4 the steering is noticeably heavier.

So to sum up, only fit these if you are doing major off-road klicks, otherwise stick with an all terrain, yes they look grouse but will be hard to live with if you do lots of city driving and on the black sticky stuff.

I'll do a long term assessment of these as we run up the clicks on them.

Thanks Dad, sadly while I've finally got new Muddies, I'm not allowed to use them to go mud bashing emoticon as Dad has cleaned me right up for my sale, these were bought for my replacement.

have a great day and say G'Day to ya EXY for me emoticon

PS Photos will be posted tomorrow emoticon

Re:

Technically mine was a stock petrol exy.. and I've had 235/70/16 mud tyres on my car for 40,000+ k's now. No dramas whatsoever. Only had the exhaust upgraded in the last month or so. Slight loss of power and gearing but it's not huge, definitely more noticeable offroad however.

I believe you are in VIC? If so the 7% rule doesn't apply to you. It's in NSW only. VIC still run the old VSB14 which for an X-Trail means 15mm increase in tyre diameter max.

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

Yep from the tyre placard. If it says two sizes then they take the biggest one.
