I found some 15" Rock Crawler 82 in the shed and now I'm thinking about getting

BFG Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 235/75R15

... does anyone have some experience with them?

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

15" wheels won't fit on the T31. Need 16" or larger.

Re:

Good point emoticon also called Bob Jane and the guy said it's illegal anyway since it >15mm more OD compared to the biggest tyres (which is 215/65R16 for the old T31-ST).

Thanks Toddy

Re:

Rules have changed VSI6(?) was released recently and you can now have 7% larger than the largest manufacturer-specified size. So you can go 7% larger than the size on your tyre placard. My 235/70/16 mud tyres are now legal, just to give you an idea.

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

As Ian said I would call them back and tell them to check the new regs as the rules have changed.

Re:

This is doing my head in emoticon

Anyway here is some stuff I collected over googling:

First of all VSB 14 section 4.2.4 Overall Nominal Diameter applies:

"The overall diameter of any tyre fitted to:
- 4WD passenger vehicles specifically designed for off-road use (typically MC ADR
category). All wheel drive (AWD) vehicles including those AWD vehicles that may be
certified as MC ADR category, (also commonly known as soft roaders) are not
included in this category;
[...]
must not be more than 50mm larger or 26mm smaller than that of any tyre designated by the
vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle."
because

The certification for the T31 xtrail states it is an ADR category MC and various tyre sizes are listed:
http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/perl/38546_902305_RVD_12Jul2010084254.cmd

The tallest overall diameter would apply to 225/55 R18 = 704mm

Based on this you can put a tyre on the T31 where the OD is 754mm, given all other requirements like speedometer accuracy and clearance are met.

... now on to finding a tyre place.

edit: fixed format

Google isn't everything.. read that. As we have both said, the rules recently changed and as such, aren't yet widely known.

It certainly is. Just for the added benefit of people who seem to ignore logic..
