Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

Hi. We also continue to ponder the whole AT Tyre issue for our T31 with 17inch rims. Has anyone actually replaced their 17inch alloy rims with 16inch steel ones? And if so, did you get new Nissan ones and how much were they? Our cheapest quote is $280, and there seems to be some angst among tyre dealers that the 16inch might interfere with the brake calipers. We have had no luck with trying to get non-nissan rims, either 16 or 17inch that fit!!
We need to take two spare wheels on our Kimberley trip and it's going to cost around $700 for the extra 17inch alloy, plus 6 new AT tyres!! Ouch! Probably go this way, but still want to know more about the reality of getting 16inch rims!!! And like the idea of a great choice of tyres.
By the way Cooper dealers are saying they do not have a tyre to fit our rims that are "legal" The 235/60/17 we are told, increase the diameter by 20 mm and the legal limit is 15mm. But we could risk it anyway?!
Hi Charles,
Did you get any response to your questions? When are you taking off for your Kimberley trip? We too, are considering the Coopers Tires, but the cost factor of shoeing the 17" rims is looking rather expensive.
I would be interested to know what other members think and have done themselves.

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31
Yes Daniel, space is limited at the back for an over-sized spare tyre. I couldn't fit the 18" alloy wheel in there, so settled for the 16 spare in the same rolling diameter as my 18" alloys.

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31
The reason second-hand 16' rims are scarce is because the previous model had 15" steels and 16" aloys. So to get steelies you have to find a wrecked base model 07/08 Xtrail, or find someone who has replaced their steels from their base model with after-market alloys. One of our tyre dealers, who has a mate who is a Nissan dealer, said that people are just not upgrading their steels to alloys- given the problem we have had even finding a load-rated alloy, I am not surprised. People who want the alloys tend also to want 6 stacker cd players etc, so the get the next (or any other) model up.
So good luck trying to find some steelies.
Our local tyre dealer swore that Falcon BA+ series 16" steels would fit, so we tried them. Right offset, right size etc. Went on the back okay, but wouldn't go over the brake caliper on the front, which is a bit bigger. (due to the shape of the rim) Oh and it didn't fit snugly on the central hub.
So we tried a Territory 17" steel for a spare, which are a bit wider. (7.5") But we still have the same tyre problem, and it didn't fit the central axle snugly, so we gave that away. (Ironically,we were offered 4 s/h Territory rims for $240, or one rim for $300. Blah.)
So we have given in and gone with the expensive Nissan Alloy. It fits. It's legal. It's load-rated correctly. It won't mess with insurance or warranty etc.
Oh, and we're not towing, and we are going for three months. We've been looking at all this for 2 months.
From what we can tell, most of the states reg's are the same (no more than 15mm greater), but the Northern Territory seems to be a little laxer. However, they are according to "Australian Standards" so should apply there too.
Mind you, our tyre dealer said that if it was his car, he would go with the Coopers- he just can't tell us to. (He does sell coopers, of course.) Apparently the standards are being reviewed sometime this year, perhaps in light of the number of 4WD's on the road that don't comply!
We'll certainly put up a trip report when we're back.
Cheers

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31
Hi Charles,
quote: Mind you, our tyre dealer said that if it was his car, he would go with the Coopers- he just can't tell us to.
I was talking to a Coopers rep a 4x4/Camping show last weekend asking whether or not he knew of any plans to produce a tyre legally suitable for the XTrail (......they don't). We were talking about the legalities of putting oversize tyres on and the chance of the NSW RTA following the NCOP anytime in the near future (fingers crossed but probably not was the answer to that one!). I was surprised when he then told me that he estimated that maybe half of the 4WD's on the roads with oversize tyres are illegal as they have been fitted without getting the necessary checks or engineering cert's (I'm not actually sure what is needed), and that includes the Navara he had driven to the show. Not sure how accurate his estimate was and clearly we can't condone or recommend anyone fitting tyres that don't follow the RTA guidelines but it certainly gives you something to think about.
