Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31
Hi George, unfortunately you will be limited with the 18" rims. I can't recommend any specific tyres brands but I can tell you that 225/60/R18 would be the biggest you could go without scrubbing issues (and even then there may be minor scrubbing on the inside fender). That will give you an extra 11mm of sidewall height. You can figure all this out yourself by clicking the 'tyre with a ruler next to it' at the top of the page.

Hi Kurt,
I too was a bit dubious about Whisk8 comments. I have 235/70/16 A/T (not as aggressive as Ian's), and there's a touch of scrubbing at full lock (nothing too worrying). There is no way I'd get these wheels on without the lift.
I'm actually thinking - maybe its the offset of the rims thats making a difference as well, as mine are +35 and Ian has +40 or +45 - and therefore moves the rims centre line away from the car... when turning, it brings the edge of the tyre closer to the wheel arch.
Hi guys,
Just checking in here after a long absence and noticed the above. For the benefit of future queries, I have been running 235/65/17 tyres since my first post a few years ago, with no problems. Initially they were Cooper ATRs, and when they wore out I swapped to Pirelli Scorpion ATRs in the same size. I don't have a lift kit fitted, nor any other mod which would affect the tyres. They have lightly scrubbed about 5 times total, each time was when reversing down a bumpy slope at full lock. For what it's worth, I use my car offroad frequently (just did drove up the Bloomfoield track the other day for those who know it) and I find this tyre size to be ideal for the car, but can only speak from my personal experience.
Take it or leave it.

Re:
Modifying the camber on either the front or rear really wouldn't help you with the T31, bigwillie. My tyres completely fill the wheel well (58mm overall diameter increase from oem) and that's just with the lift kit. The distance on both the front and rear of all wheel-wells is pretty much equal as is. There's nothing to gain by changing any of the suspension angles. The important things to consider with oversize tyres are the offset (really important) and the wheel/tyre width.

Re:
Any type of aggressive or oversized tyre is going to affect fuel consumption.
It will also shorten the life of CV's, wheel bearings, drive line and steering components.

Re:
Bigwillie, if you read back through the thread, you will find all you need regarding other forum member's experience with different tyre/rim sizes (it WILL be in there). In my personal experience, my fuel economy was drastically decreased, but in my defence, I also have the largest tyres ever fitted to an xtrail, haha. Small increases in Overall Diameter won't hurt your wallet any more than fluctuating fuel prices already do, so with the size you're aiming for, I'd at least expect a reasonable difference.
Tony,
I agree in this instance, as bigwillie's tyres will be a notable increase in size from standard. Although the "Any type of oversized tyre" comment may have been a little too broad to warrant the cv/driveline/steering,etc warning. Oversized wheels/tyres are an incredibly common occurence, in particular with the younger crowd ie. 20inch rims on all manner of light/heavy vehicles, and it's fairly rare that you'll hear about cv's and the like breaking/failing earlier than they usually would on those particular cars. Keeping in mind too, that younger folk are also significantly more likely to push/punish those driveline/steering components more than anyone on the road, haha.

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31
Hi to All,
I have been running the Yokohama Geolanders in 225 / 65 /17 for nearly 12,000 klm since November last year. Fuel usage is up by about half a litre per 100 klm from my original factory Bridgestones which were the 215 / 16. With a rolling diameter of some 46mm more, I got a lift of 23 mm and at no point have they scrubbed, scraped on the body work. Bonus is the van is now level behind it. They are also a great tyre in both wet and dry and gravel, with road noise minimal. I'm actually going to get a 225 /70/16 and fit this to it's existing steel rim as the spare as there is only 4mm difference in diameter.
