Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

I put 225/70/16's Yokie GOs on with no issues at all and without a lift. Was considering going for 235, but was too close to call for scrubbing and borderline legal. Speedo is now within a couple of K's of being spot on!!

Could definitely fit 235s with a lift

Re: Re:

Cooch has given the perfect solution:

"OK dearest, I understand what you are saying.
I'd like the bigger tyres but, for you - I'll only do the lift."

In the fullness of time, the tyres will need to be replaced for safety (she will agree) .
Then refit with oversize.

Win, win.

Re:

Better... As its a work car, I can draw down on my salary sacrifice account after 12 months to spring for new tyres.

Lift it is (the I can squeeze 235/75/16 mud tyres on without any problem)

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

I don't mean to rain on your parade Michael, but there is no way you could fit 235/75/16 on the X-trail. I have the lift and mine are 225/65/17 which is a diameter of 724mm. The size you're suggesting would have a diameter of 758mm. As it is my tyres touch slightly on the inside fender when the springs are compressed and I'm on full steering lock. Click on the tyre and ruler icon 2nd from the right on the top of the page and it will take you to a tyre size comparison site.

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

Here's a question that I can't seem to find anywhere this thread:

Does anyone know or has anyone heard of/tried to fit aftermarket 15" wheels to the T31, that have a lower offset, so as to not foul the front brake calipers? I'm expecting to hear the usual "you'll have more tyre options with 16" wheels, etc etc", but when it comes to serious offroad/mud tyres, it's actually a lot harder to find tyres that will fit in our wheel well, in the 16" category, ie. the diameter of a 235/75/15 (very common offroad tyre size) is 733mm.. the closest (common) offroad tyre size with 16" wheels is 225/75/16, with a diameter of 744, which is starting to push the already stretched limit, even with the lift I'll have.

Any suggestions? Any experiences? The main aim here is (serious) offroad tyre selection, so I'm limited by the sizes that are commonly available. I've found a few more selection in the All-Terrain category, but I'm not really interested in any of the ones that I've found (sorry to the BFG a/t & Yoko ats fan clubs based within the forum..)

Tyres/brands already researched:
Kumho - Road Venture MT
Mickey Thompson
BFGoodrich - AT & MT
Federal - Couragia MT
Nankang - AT & MT
Maxxis - Bighorn, Bravo & Buckshot Mudder
Goodyear - All forms of mud & a/t
General - Grabber AT2
Yokohama
Hankook - Dynapro AT & MT
Cooper - ATR, AT3, S/T, ST Max & STT
Continental - CrossContact AT

As you can all see, I've kind of done my homework and put in the hard yards. So I would just like to avoid settling for something I'm only semi-happy with, and hopefully avoid trial & error with buying tyres that may or may not fit. If any of you manage to help in some way, I'm sure there'll be a cold one destined for your fridge (or hand) in the near future.

Re:

Ian, the offset isn't the problem, it's the diameter (15') of the rim that hit the brake callipers.
As for tyres, the Cooper STT and the ST Max are very good in the dirt.
Only problem with mud style tyres is that they don't drive well on road, I know you need them for off road only but you still have to drive to and from the bush.

My advice is get on the websites and type in what size your after in that brand of tyre.

Re:

... as on the previous thread... with the pedders lift, and using 16" steel rims (not sure if there's a slight difference between T30 and T31 steels... no idea from which mine came from) I was able to get a set of A/T 235/70/16 onto the car... JUST!

Haven't scrubbed yet, and that included the Ben Bullen trip and a bit more since.

The only caveat is you have to remove the little plastic rear mud-flap in the front wheel arch as the clearance is tight at full lock and if it gunks up with mud you may find it missing.

Re: mud tyres - i can understand wanting to go to 15"... there's SOOOO many more choices. I haven't found any M/T's that is equal or smaller to 235/7016 (diameter: 735mm)

EDIT... found some M/T's in 235/70/16 (may need to purchase from USA... i've done it before and its quite easy):

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=Mud-Terrain+T/A+KM2&partnum=37QR6KM2RWLV2 <i've dealt with Tirerack before and they were really good... fedex'd my tyres within a few days of a TT transfer
... also as they're stocked by BFGoodrich australia then they've undergone ADR testing!
http://www.bfgoodrich.com.au/product-range/4x4-tyres/4x4-suv-tyres/mud-terrain-km2-4x4-tyre/
Brochure says diameter is 736mm so should fit emoticon

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

I must've missed those bfg's somehow, Michael, so thanks. Not so unbelievable when I've been looking at numbers and computer screens for so many weeks :/ Also, how terrible is their background photo for reading small white numbers on!

As for the hankooks, I'm curious, because those are the exact tyres I wanted, and this was my source after realising I couldn't use 15"... (select dynapro MT, further down the page, and then sizes)
http://www.hankooktyre.com.au/Product/product_main.aspx?pageNum=1&subNum=1&ChildNum=1&FnCode=01

Yet, JAX website says they do have that size? Weird. Will definitely hunt down a few nearby JAX stores for available stock sizes now that I've seen that. I remember the guy telling me this morning that they didn't have any dynapro mt's in sizes for 16" that would fit my car.. (Ha...ha.. how many times have we all heard that) And that was a JAX store. Will be making many calls tomorrow, I can see it already, haha.
