Thinking about oversized tyres on T31

As of the 8th of November, 2013 the Australian Design Rules have been changed to allow fitment of larger tyres legally. Please refer to details included HERE

Note: The link is for the updated NSW Rules, but other States have followed suit as well, so you can check with your local Road & Traffic Authority to make sure it covers you as well.

Yes, it will be 5% faster than the factory tyres which is too much of a difference.

The optimal size would be 225/55/17 which is only 1.5% slower.

I was having a chat with dronus about AT tyres for his T31 diesel. The Pirelli Scorpion AT is available in 235/65R17. This gives nearly a 1" lift. Have a read of this AT tyre review by 4wd Monthly. The Scorpion AT is at the top of the list.

For Australian Exy drivers, they might want to have a read of the NCOP. Look at NCOP 11 Section LS and scroll down to page 16 where it says

The overall diameter of a tyre fitted to an off-road passenger vehicle or a commercial vehicle must not be larger than 50mm or 26mm smaller than that of any tyre designated by the vehicle manufacturer for that model.

Speedometer accuracy must be maintained for the selected tyre and rim combination to within the degree of accuracy specified within ADR 18 where applicable.

One could argue that an Exy is an off-road vehicle, no?

Also check your tire clearance at the front with full steering lock
On my T-31 I could not go much bigger than standard and still use snow chains, its pretty tight.

Well that's a bummer that the T31 clearances seems to be less than the T30.

Here is Transport SA legislation. The relevant ruling regarding overall tyre diameter is on page 14. It says not larger than 15mm is permitted.

I hope I can shed some light here. I recently put some Cooper 23565R17s on my T31, and they fit fine. I get the free 1" lift, and no clearance problems at all - mind you I have no real need for snow chains up here but they may be pushing it when cornering tightly.

My local authority simplified the deefinitions of 'offroad vehicle' within NCOP for me. He said if the compliance plate has 'MC' in the top corner, it qualifies as an offroad vehicle, otherwise it would have 'MV'. Mine has MC so I'm happy. My new tyres are 48mm more than original, so legal (just) as it's under 50mm.

Speedo is now overreading by 1kmh, as opposed to the 7kmh with original tyres.

All, thanks for your replies and the links - thankfully the NCOP doesn't affect me as I'm in the UK - so no need to worry about snow chains either!

Jal, I've used an online calculator and see what you mean about the 225/55/17 being a closer match in size (less than 2% as opposed to 5%) but if I go for a smaller tyre isn't my fuel consumption liable to decrease? At present I'm paying £1.25 which is the equivalent of 2.70 Australian dollars a litre - I don't know how that compares with diesel costs for you?

Whisk8, Can I ask you how's your fuel consumption since you changed to the 235s?
