Re: Manual - hard to select first gear sometimes

Well, my problem with first gear being hard to select has dissapeared over time. I would say by the 10000km mark it had virtually dissapeared. It was annoying, but probably just the gearbox being a bit tight because it was new

Re: Manual - hard to select first gear sometimes

Hi Fangios,

I am finding the same problem on occasions. I have done 8000 km and now that you have also noticed the problem I will be paying particular attention to this. I thought it might be me.

In relation to the abruptness of the clutch, when I went for the test drive, i was told that this is the norm and u will probably kangaroo hop it at first..... he was right. This has proven a bit hard for the learner drivers in the family to get used to.

Other than that I am wrapped with my X Trail.......... the performance and fuel economy on long trips is great. Just need to take a bottle along so i dont have to stop between Melbourne and Adelaide.

enjoy

Re: Manual - hard to select first gear sometimes

Hey, yeah, that happened to me, not wanting to go into first after reversing. It is not happening frequently, but has happened twice. I have just done 1200 km so will leave it for a bit and see if it gets better with wearing in....

42,000 km and still hard to go into first gear sometimes, only had it for a month, the rest of the gearbox is good.

Re: Manual - hard to select first gear sometimes

I have found sometimes that if you don't depress the clutch all the way this can happen.

There is limited adjustment on the control cables at the gearbox - hard to see and get to unless battery/ECU is removed. It might be they just haven't been set up quite right or perhaps even lubricated at assembly properly.

Not sure if anyone on the forum has had a go at investigating the linkages/adjustment procedure.

Re:

mine is 1st and 2nd. it will not disengage 1st gear, and would not engage 2nd when it's cold.

its worse in colder climate. but when it was new it was perfect. this happened when the engine was pulled apart the first time at 11,000 kms.

Re:

I've got my exy going in on Friday to claim under warranty for this exact issue. Its really bad when cold and feels very much like the gear lever is going to snap off when trying to select first. I've tried double clutching prior to selection, I've tried stopping completely before selecting first but nothing really changes. Then once first is finally selected the change to second is quite abrupt and feels very ugly.

Re:

Bet they only replace the syncros.

Ford tried to do the same to me in my work ranger, until our fleet guy had a few words to them. Most service places will only replace the entire gearbox if it is completely broken/seized/damaged. It's alot to do with approval process within the company (Nissan, ford and the rest).

Re:

my issues with the gears have been caused by "allegedly" and i use this term lightly

rear main seal and flywheel bolts leaking heavily onto the flywheel and clutch assembly, causing slip and messing with the clutch assembly to engage / disengage gears.
