Thank you dlpeek.
There was some method in my madness.
I opted for the edging material as the raw cut mesh would have scratched the paint and plastic and I selected the external placement to maximise support by the grille bars to the mesh against stones, insects and wind pressure.
Also I didn't want to remove the grille or bumper.
I do feel a bit dumb as I missed an entire thread on Radiator Protection in "Int/ext accessories and mods." as I was fixated on categorising the making of the inserts as a DIY job and only looked here. Even then I missed this existing thread.
However in the end it is just another way to skin this particular rabbit. Easier than most but not as neat as others.
