Re: Side mirrors are dangerous!

I had both moirrors cut for $30.00 each and fitted them today. I put black silicone around the edges so the edge of the flat mirror blends in very well with the plastic surround of the convex mirror underneath. I am very happy with the result and have'nt looked back since ..... oops did I say that. Thanks again for the mirror removal tips.

How easy was this to do?

I really don't like the convex mirrors?

Re: Side mirrors are dangerous!

It was'nt hard but keep in mind not to use excessive force or you could damage the mirror tilt motors.
I started by tilting the mirror top in bottom out. The bottom of the mirror mounting plate should unclip by pulling at right angles to the surface. The mirror is then pulled out and down to release from the upper attachment.. I attached the new mirrors with silastic and when it was set I used black silastic around the edges to make it blend in. I think some mirror suppliers can actually do the mirror removal if you dont feel confident.

Re: Side mirrors are dangerous!

I finally got around to getting my flat mirrors. I went to my Nissan dealer and ordered new mirror lenses for a 2002 X-Trail and quoted the part numbers given on this site. They cost $45 each but had to be specially ordered in.
They arrived the next day and I changed them over that night - it's a pretty weird job replacing them. They come out alright but I was worried about getting the new ones back on properly - took a fair bit of pushing. I was expecting a nice, solid click to say they were properly seated - this doesn't happen. You can pull the bottom out just far enough to squeeze a finger in and check that the plate is seated snugly at the back.

Went out for a drive to try them and was motoring along enjoying the clear view out the right hand side; then glanced across to the left and ...... oh my god! the left mirror was not flat! I went home and checked carefully. Yep - definitely a curved mirror. I thought maybe I had been silly enough to put the old mirror back on, but no, this was the new one.

I went back to see my dealer and he showed me on the computer that the same part is used on all model X-Trails (up to the new shape). He said the part numbers I quoted were a group number (or something). He would not take the mirror back as it was a special order.

A bit dejected .... I went to see the local glazier on the off chance they might be able to do something. He said yeah.... we smash the old mirror out and cut another piece to replace it. cost - $30 including glueing back in the mount. I had them do this and picked it up next day.

I am now very happy with the mirrors.

Re: Side mirrors are dangerous!

Sounds a bit brutal breaking the glass. I silastic'd mine over the top of the originals and put black silastic around the edge gap. I do feel a lot happier but there is a little loss of vision on the left .

Re: Side mirrors are dangerous!

Perhaps it is a little brutal - I had a spare set of mirrors so wasn't too concerned. Anyhow, I am very happy with the result - hard to tell that they are not original mirrors (except they are flat).

I added a little blind spot mirror (because that is now an issue). I think I now have a good solution - I can easily tell how far behind a vehicle is when I see it in my mirror, and the blind spot mirrors alert me when there is a vehicle there.

Re: Side mirrors are dangerous!

I second that Kev - any chance of a pic Michael?

Ive been thinking of doing this although didnt want to as the car is only a month old! Seeing how easy it is I will give it a go.

Jalal, is Michael still an active member so we can get a pic?
