Side mirrors are dangerous!
Am I the only one who dislikes the convex side mirrors?
I find it very hard to judge how far away a vehicle is when using the side mirrors - sure, the convex shape gives you a wider view - but I feel that comes at at a significant cost.
On more than one occasion I have nearly pulled out too early in front of traffic.
Does anyone know if there are alternative mirrors available that have flat glass?
Or is it possible to replace the mirror in the existing housings with flat ones?

Re: Side mirrors are dangerous!
Hi Michael,
I have searched for the thread where I have provided the part number for the Series I (2001-2005) xtrail flat mirrors, but I can't find it.
The mirror lenses cost about $55 each and you can order them from any dealer. Just make sure you ask for a Series I flat mirrors and if they ask you for the year model of your xtrail, just tell them it's a 2002 so they give you the correct ones. Then it is only a matter of popping out your existing mirror lenses and replacing them with these ones without taking off the mirror housing at all. You just need to push the mirror lens all the way down and unclip it from its place.

Re: Side mirrors are dangerous!
It's a matter of getting used to them I think. I am using convex mirrors on mine at the moment and for the first month or so I was cutting people off until I got used to them and can now judge the distance much better.

Re: Side mirrors are dangerous!
Reading this thread, I've just realised I finally got used to mine somewhere along the way.
Having done 90,000km in two and a half years probably helps. I hated them in the beginning and I was always doubly wary, but I wouldn't bother to change them now.
Just got to be extra careful til you do get used to it.

Nope, it's not possible. The size of the mirror lenses is different between the T30 and T31.
If you can't get used to them you can approach car mirror making factories locally and they would most probably be able to cut a flat mirror lens to shape which can be stuck on top of your existing mirror lens.

Re: Side mirrors are dangerous!
My understanding is that the ADR was amended in 2006 to allow manufacturers to use convex mirrors which formed part of a revised safety standards in most countries around the world which have adopted the use of convex mirrors (especially for the driver's side).
Studies have proved that wider field of view provide a much better safety aspect than reflecting the correct distance and there are two camps to this argument, as some of you guys have experienced, judging the distance correctly is one of the safety concerns.
Personally though, I look at it just like having the dials in the middle of the dash (for the T30 models). It was wierd to drive with when I first bought the car but now, it's just there and I don't mind it at all
