Re: BlackThunda NSW Meet-up 12-07-2008
More photos...
After an inspection under the car during daylight today, and having cleared a few HANDFULS of chunks of dried mud from the front of the bashplate, I have seen how much damage the bashplate has prevented reaching the critical engine parts such as the air conditioner compressor, the 90degree bend in the exhaust under the pre-cat, and the SUMP!
I really should take the bashplate off and inspect further as I can see through the gaps that the heatshield over the bottom of the pre-cat has been bent and/or the entire exhaust is bent and touching the front-to-rear cross-member next to it, and also it is touching the bashplate (it looks like the bashplate has pushed the exhaust towards the centre of the car).
Here are the photos of the bashplate. You can see how mangled it now is (it was perfectly straight before!), and now the exhaust actually protrudes through the hole I cut into the bashplate earlier this year, and also notice the chunks I took out of the bottom of the nudge bar. I think I even managed to dent the front-to-rear cross-member, too!
Now just to go through 25 video clips and pick the best ones of them to shrink and attach...

A good saying but it depends on the size of the damage and the $$$ coming out of your pocket repairing it. That can be a long lasting memory too, but not a pleasant one I still dream about my dead diff as a result of the fun I had on the dyno for a whole day. hehehehe
We can all have fun off-roading and in a safe manner, but when it comes to trashing your pride and joy and your investment which one paid top dollar for and probably using it as the family car, it becomes a bit costly and un-safe at the same time.
I am not saying that you guys didn't have a great day, it certainly looked like you all had plenty of fun, am just saying that it would have been better to take it a bit more carefully and the bangs and jumps I have seen through the pics and vids, certainly gave me the impression that it was "demolition derby" that day

Re: BlackThunda NSW Meet-up 12-07-2008
Paul,
What else can you expect after doing that climb
Sounds like you have hit the transfer case pretty hard and also the main shaft. Just make sure that shaft coupling has all the bolts still attached to it. The check engine light could be related to damaging the sensor that is located under the transmission box
What amazed me though after seeing these videos is that not single one of you had guidance in regards to wheel placement and the best path to take and you all seem to be tackling such a rough terrain with such speed and force that it is just painful to watch
I always say what I think in all honesty and maybe in a less diplomatic way that you guys would have hoped to hear, but this trip and the damage resulting from it to your cars (and I would tally up the damage bill from all those who have damaged their exy in this trip) is NOT fun and is NOT what our forum is about!
I can only imagine newbies watching these videos and thinking we're a bunch of xtrailers that are gathered here to find ways to demolish our cars and then have a laugh about it. Sorry guys, but we're not here to give that impression and scare people of.

Re: BlackThunda NSW Meet-up 12-07-2008
I can understand your concerns, Jalal, but there was certainly ALOT of discussion in regards to the lines to take. It was only evident from Chris' video - you could hear all the commotion across the CB radios - a couple of people that were spectating were also carrying their handhelds and offering guidance - all the while, maintaining a safe distance off the track.
I personally chose not to tackle the terrain that Alex, Paul & Jamie attempted - mainly because I had lowered my tyre pressures so much that I had substantially reduced my clearance, as I mentioned numerous times over the radio that I had bottomed-out on many sections of track that no-one else had reported they bottomed-out on. Although under normal circumstances lowering pressure would assist in traction, in this case, clearance and the size of the "steps" in the track was the main problem. As mentioned earlier in this thread, Paul's springs were too bouncy to maintain tyre contact with the ground. His first attempt was much slower and you can see and hear the wheels spinning. I am sure it was not his intention to bounce as much as he did on the 2nd attempt!
