Re: Engine Mounts

Just had my 02 Xtrail serviced, first time for me as Ive only just bought it (148000kms) and the front and rear engine mounts need replacing. Mechanic rang around and got a price of $765.60 supply and fit. I'm in Adelaide, plus clutch will need replacing in the future and Ive been reading the clutch thread as well. Any advice on suppliers would be most welcome.

Still amazes me how expensive it is to even get supposed basic work done is. I'm up for a new clutch soon too and some mount/bracket that they said should be done when the clutch is done.

Changing engine mounts in the xtrail is far from being "basic work" mate!

me & a 2nd year apprentice did whole job in about two hours , with out removing sub frame, it was a very tight squeeze, but using two tyre levers & some muscle we got the job done.
worst part was the 2 top bolts holding mount to gear box you can not see the bolt heads at all
so had to do by feel

I'd like to know in a bit more detail how this was done.
It is easy to remove the 3 bolts holding the mount to the sub-frame, but the bolts holding the bracket to the transmission are too hard to get a spanner onto and the main bolt through the middle of the mount cannot be taken out as there is a main frame member in the way.

If only they had welded the nut to the other side of the bracket so the bolt slipped in from the right...there is plenty of space over to the tailshaft emoticon

Engine Mount Fun

Hi Guys,

I've had a heap of fun with engine mounts recently.

A recent trip to the beach put one of my engine mounts out of sorts. At idle, the exy shakes really bad, but when you're driving, you can't tell at all. A mate and I inspected all the mounts, and we thought the one on the gearbox was the one shaking the most. So we bought a new one and changed it. What a mission. Turns out, we changed the wrong one (anyone want to buy a new or secondhand gearbox mount)

So now I'm back to square one, and wouldn't mind hearing people's opinion on which engine mount might be causing lots of shaking at idle, and smooth when you are driving. None of the mounts seem to be moving any more than others, and we cannot see any cracks in them. I haven't looked for dripping oil though... that sounds interesting.

Thanks for your help!

its a T30s2 btw.

Brendan

Re:

More likely it would be the mount where there is less weight on it when the engine starts to twist under acceleration.

Re: Engine Mounts

Normally both the front and rear engine mounts would need to be changed together as when one has gone it puts more stress on the other.
I expect from your description of "gearbox mount" you changed the rear engine mount ?
If so then I would like to know what exactly you did as I have found it very hard to remove the centre bolt from mine to change it.
The front mount is very easy, just drop the centre frame after removing the centre bolt for the mount as the engine supports itself off the other 3 mounts.
I have pics of doing mine if you would like them.

Re: Engine Mounts

Cooch:
Unfortunately we've tried all that; none of the 4 mounts seem to be moving. emoticon We've even had it up on a hoist looking from the bottom; spent at least an hour studying all the mounts under idle, start, revving, none of them seem to be moving. Really frustrating!

Kev:
When I say "gearbox mount" its the one when you open the bonnet, its on the right hand side, under the airbox. Not sure if this is the one you are talking about, but to get all the bolts out was really awkward; we had to select different gears so the linkages would move around to get access to all the bolts. Obviously, we had a jack underneath it taking the weight at the time.
