Watagans 2: Revenge of the clay (12-13 June)

I am proposing a trip to the Watagans on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th June. This is two days before the trip to Stockton beach (Saturday 16th). The idea is to camp there Thursday and Friday nights and then join the Stockton trip. Those not into camping should be able to find accommodation not too far away and could find us again on the Friday. The itinerary would be roughly as follows:

Thursday: Meet at the Ourimbah interchange as we did on the last trip to the Watagans Travel around the Onley State Forrest. On the last trip we were in this Forrest on the South and West sides. I propose we do the East and North sides this time, checking out a few side trails mentioned in other 4WD forums and revisiting Prickly Ridge road (which had challenging clay last time but should be OK if it hasn’t rained).
Camping at Pines, Turpentines or Casuarina camping area (whichever is the nicest).

Friday: Up Watagans Forrest road into the Watagans National Park, exploring side tracks.
On to Freemans Waterhole and into the Awaba State Forrest and explore tracks
Maybe north to Heaton State Forrest
Look fore somewhere to camp (probably won't be a proper camping site)

Saturday: probably about three quarters of an hour to Stockton (depending on where we camp). We need to be there 9.30am.

Any takers?

Alex

Here is the fine print Jalal wants everyone to read before going on a trip.

Alex,

Don't mean to discourage anyone from joining you on this adventure, but I think it'll be a bit too much in terms of sequential events and more importantly lack of (free time).

This event is better postponed until after the Stockton trip and July seems like a more logical choice when Jamie (BlackThunda) will be here and another outing will be due.

Just a thought.

Jalal

I appreciate that the Watagans is getting a lot of attention. However I am taking holidays in June and so the extension of the Stockton trip became an obvious one for me. Someone else expressed interest in joining me so I though I would propose it to the Forum members. However, I fully expect that most people cannot make it because of work committments. I'm just saying that others are welcome to join me if they can and want to.

Since the last trip to the Watagans I have been wanting to do it in more depth and taking more time. Think of it as a scouting/research exercise to identify the best places to take Jamieemoticon

Fair enough. I wish I had as much holidays as you do LOL emoticon

I raised the point to avoid any impact to the bigger event and that is Stockton, so I hope you will understand where I was coming from.

Have fun.

Sure do Jalal. I would expect that anyone who joins me would be intending to do Stockton as well.

The only reason I have a lot of holidays is that I did not take many years ago. Not much fun at the time, but its great now emoticon

Hi Guys,

Just for your info....A track update of the route we did in April. I went up last weekend with a mate in his TD5 Discovery and the roads are really muddy and getting rougher by the minute. With all this week's rain...it will be mud central.

The BIG crossing on Old Mill Track is just as narky as it was. Though the slope is slowly eroding down, the mush pile at the base of the creek is getting towards 2 feet deep. The Turbo Diesel Disco in low range and with everything locked couldn't do it. 8(

OK Paul. It will be great if you can come. If it continues to rain then I may go up on the Friday and only spend one night there, but at the moment I am aiming for the two days still.

Dave, thanks for that. I certainly was not intending to do the Old Mill track given that the major crossing was impossible for an exy last time. With all this rain, even main tracks like Prickly Ridge (I think that is the name) will be a great challenge (with the clay, etc). Looking forward to it. The time will be nice an relaxing compared to the first half of the week trying to fix multiple failures on my PC (writing this from another PC)emoticon
