Re: DIESEL T31 X-TRAIL COMING JULY 2008

the diesel will only come out in front if you do a fair few ks.
if you do less than ( say ) 20,000 ish ks per year it will proberly be cheaper to have a petrol.

With more diesel vehicles coming into Australia I won't be surprised to see the price of diesel overtaking petrol very soon, then such savings won't be practical and/or attractive anymore.

Re: DIESEL T31 X-TRAIL COMING JULY 2008

I am not sure Jalal.

Currently diesel for private vehicles makes up only about 10% of Australian oil company's income for diesel, with the rest coming from commercial use (primarily mining).

The significant price premium for diesel can be largely attributed to the fact that diesel, unlike petrol does not benefit as much as petrol from economies of scale in supply to service stations.

It is likely that the gap between the price of petrol and diesel at the pump will shrink as the private market grows.

That said simple economics also state that and increase in demand will result in an increase in price if supply remains constant.

If the demand for diesel in mining and other commercial areas was not so high diesel would be cheaper at the pump.

It is less expensive to produce diesel, so really the price should not be higher than petrol.

As for which would be the cheaper option for running your car, as Matt says the benefits are only compounded if you are doing a lot of mileage.

Hmm me thinks the calculator will answer this.

I will report back shortly

(hey I just hit 300 posts woo hoo!!)

Jalal
Here in Newcastle it has - thats why I mentioned about the price disparity.
Diesel is approx 20-25cpl dearer than standard ULP. However I didn't mention that I drive approx 30-35000km per year so the sums for me still seem to add up.

Re: DIESEL T31 X-TRAIL COMING JULY 2008

It was only a few years ago that diesel was about 10 cents a litre cheaper than ULP. PULP 98 was only 7 cents dearer than ULP. The gap is now ridiculous.

The oil company quickly works out diesel and PULP only cars belong to the upper-middle and high class niche market who can afford to pay that extra. I’ll bet my money on Woodside Petroleum shares. Nissan should also bring out a hybrid xTrail for those green drivers.

Re: DIESEL T31 X-TRAIL COMING JULY 2008

If fuel prices where your only reason for buying a diesel Xtrail I think it would be far cheaper to convert a petrol xtrail to an LPG user.
I t would be cheaper to do than paying the price difference between diesel and petrol models and it would also make u savings quicker than the diesel. Personally I like using $110 to fill up my T-31 ( sarcasm )

Just my opinion I could be wrong but I very rarely am... oh wait thats Peta who is never wrong and I am always in the wrong sorry my mistake ( again ) emoticon

Re: DIESEL T31 X-TRAIL COMING JULY 2008

If my experience of Tuesday not being able to find premium 98 fuel anywhere (not even Caltex) is anything to go by, then diesel will indeed overtake petrol pretty soon. I had to drive around for an hour until I found a servo (Caltex) that had 98 premium fuel and I had only 2 litres of fuel remaining in my car. emoticon

By that stage I didn't give a damn how much it cost me, but it was 17 cents dearer than 95!!!

I agree with Brad's theory about converting to LPG to realize immediate savings and also to have it as emergency back-up fuel source in your car.

The diesel xtrail for Australia will be built (or more accurately coming from) in Japan and production starts in June. Although the Qashqai with exactly the same engine is currently being built and manufactured in Sunderland's Nissan manufacturing plant in the UK and then exported to Japan.

It is indeed very possible that the diesel xtrail for Australia will come from Japan and will have the Japanese manufacturing plates, but it could have been assembled in UK....or even Spain.

Re: DIESEL T31 X-TRAIL COMING JULY 2008

Hey Jalal,

I'd be interested to know which you think would be quicker...the Series 1 petrol with the full 25kW exhaust mods or the new Diesel with the higher torque ?

Also, is there any gains to be had if Hitech developed a high-flow exhaust system for the new Diesel ?

Kev,

2 completely different vehicles that can't be compared for an accurate judgment, transmission and overall weight as well shape differences would make it inaccurate.

I will be test driving both the manual and 6 speed auto diesel in July and will report my findings when I compare their performance to the petrol T31 xtrails.
