Just wondering what tyre pressures you guys were running and if you answer 'highway pressures (above 32psi), then that is why you were sliding all over the place. In mud, always go down to mid 20's, but just make sure you can pump them back up. emoticon

Brett, I was down to about 28psi hot, and had no traction.

It was just like soup today, great fun but as Chris and Emma (also at 28/29psi) were saying "scary fun"

Sorry, Paul. I should have given a better explanation.

On sand and sloppy mud like you guys had fun in, the best tyre pressures are when the footprint (length) of the tyre in contact with the ground is doubled. This allows for additional traction, but in your case, no amount of footprint lengthening would have helped. You were simply in God's hands.

Regarding the tyre pressures, I will explain it better tomorrow with pics.

I am still kicking myself for not making the effort. I would probably just be getting home now anyway (10pm) emoticon

Hey Guys,

I think Brett is right about the rubber footprint at lower pressure, but since we had rock climbing only a KM further on, it would have been a pain to repressure again....not to mention very dirty!!! I reckon the consistency of the mud was the biggest drama. The H/T rubber just filled up with the stuff, whereas Alex's A/T wider grooves threw the goop clear. Also, having a manual on the slippery stuff was a disadvantage.

I'm also wondering about the clearance thing still. With my car bog standard, I didn't hit anything low down. I looked at some of the photos of mine next to Pauls (basically identical StS Xtreme, except mine ins manual and his auto) and mine looks a little higher. Does anyone know if manual Exys ride a little higher than autos? I know this is the case with some road cars, like Commodores.

Anyway.....I'm off to get the buckets and suds. The rain has done some of the cleaning....but there's much work to be done!!!

I just finished cleaning mine Dave, and looking at the 500kilos of dirt that is now on the ground in my garden I might have found the reason for any difference in ride height LOL

Not sure there is much of a difference though, I imagine the auto would be heavier but can't see it making much of a difference.

Over some of the bumps i might have been riding a bit lower as i had a passenger....

Oh well I guess I will just have to add this to my list of reasons to present to the minister for finance in favour of getting the lift emoticon

That would be excellent if you could as I am keen to learn all of this sort of stuff.

Yep, it was a shame you could not make it as we really could have done with your expertise and I have a whole heap of questions to run by you about the spring lift and A/T tyres, Oh well next time

Thankfully nobody got bogged, if that had happened I imagine we really would have wihed you were there.

I've just finished under the bonnet. Tried doing most by hand, but in the end had to resort to some judicial water squirts. Still not great, but it's a lot better. Worst of the mud is now off (thanks to a run in heavy rain this morning), but it keeps pouring and mine lives outside, so not much point in getting too fussy until the rain stops.

By the way, found this extra pic of Alex meeting his match in the Old Mill Creek...

Alex.....are you now saving up for that engineers certificate and an extra inch or two??? emoticon

Jalal....it was thicker than it looked. It took 4 of us to move it and even then it was a fairly hefty job!!! If I was solo, I'd have had to cut it.

By the way....the "men in the trees" had to brave hordes of deadly slugs and blood sucking leeches!!!! Didn't we lads!!!

Fair enough Dave emoticon

Chris, there is something wrong with your thumbnails. They can't be enlarged for some reason. Are you copying the correct code from ImageShack?
