Re: Watagans Trip April 2008

Guys,

It looks like we have a few interested still. So are we "go"?

Paul, as a suggestion, why don't we meet at Yarramalong (at the little shopping centre) sometime around 9AM and then run up to Wollombi for a photoshoot near the historic buildings and the lunch at the Pub? I have directions for this route.

With the rain over the past week (and this week), the cedar brush track up through the rainforest will be nice and juicy and there will be plenty of opportunity to get the Exy's muddy. Forecast is for showers, so it should be fun. Especially for those of us on H/T rubber.

Re: Watagans Trip April 2008

Hi Guys,

Sorry I did not get to post at the weekend

Yes, I reckon we are still go for this trip, and as Dave says with the weather having been a bit wet it looks to be a good trip.

Alex suggested we follow the ExplorOz trip, which pretty good. Details can be found HERE

Alternatively Dave suggested a route from Yarramalong and finished at Cooranbong in a 4WD weekend book he has.

Either trip should be fine and to be honest I am not hugely familiar with the area so I am happy to let you guys lead the way.

As long as we get a chance to enjoy ourselves and get a bit dirty I am happy.

To keep it simple I suggest that we meet up at the rest area at Ourimbah off the Sydney Newcastle Freeway, as this spot is close to the freeway easy to find, has plenty of parking and there is a servo very nearby. (Take the Pacific Highway Exit at Ourimbah)

Map below

Image

I think we should aim for a 9.30am meet up, we can then head over to the servo to gas up and head on our way at 10.00am (9am make my start from home about 7am which is REAL EARLY but if you prefer to meet at 9 I am ok with it)

Attendees for the trip are as follows:

PMcDermo (Paul) - Confirmed
Zipidee (Dave) - Confirmed
Alex70 (Alex) – Confirmed
Dingomouse (Chris & Emma) – Tentative
Basshead (Rich) - Tentative

As Dave says with the weather the way it has been it looks to be a good trip!!

Paul,

New members are joining-up the forum and some are from Sydney/NSW, don't forget to pop-in and have a look at the intro section of the forum and extend them an invite to this outing. Am sure some of them would be very interested to meet-up for the first time and enjoy a bit of fun.

We hope to confirm by thursday, happy with a quick drop in to the Wollombi Tavern as we need to pick up some more Dr Jurds Jungle Juice emoticon but dont forget the days are a bit shorter now so if we want to hit the dirt we dont want to spend too long at the pub. There is also agreat pub at St Albans, but thats another story...... emoticon

Re: Watagans Trip April 2008

Ourimbah rest area sounds good. I am happy with 9.30 or 9.00 whatever others want. Chris is right about the days being shorter so it would probably be better to leave the pub activity til the end of the day. The OzExplor was one thing I found on the web. However it looks a bit tame with most of it being 2WD quality. However another web site I found has indicated some more interesting tracks. I am happy to decide where we go when we meet.

Re: Watagans Trip April 2008

Guys,

I still reckon meet at Ourimbah at 9-9:30am and then head up to Wollombi might be the go. The reason being....it's part 2WD, but part of this route is definately 4WD only (but OK for an Exy). Here's a pic from my last trip. This juicy bit of mud is called Cedar Brush Track. It runs in basically the same direction as the OxExplore route, but on a different (4WD only) track.

Image

The thing I found about the Watagans, some of the 4WD stuff off the Net is VERY 4WD and not good for anything less than a trail bike or mud crawler. On the way to Wollombi there's a track I can show you called Old Mill Track. It'll test out your suspension, but you won't get right through it...it's just too damned hard. In any case, no matter where we go, the forecast is for showers, so there's no risk of the Exy coming home clean!!!!

The total distance to Wollombi on dirt is about 60km and we could be at Wollombi by early arvo. We could then have lunch at the pub, plus the scenery would make a nice backdrop for some pics of the cars. If people feel inclined, there are also a few nice wet creek crossings near the pub as well.

Anyway...I'll go with the concensus....this is just a thought.
