Quick spin around the block

I went for a drive with a mate today and had some fun. We've had a lot of rain recently, and came across this swollen creek just minutes into the trip.

Image

Then we dropped in to Darwin River Dam, and tried a 'shortcut' to Batchelor. After a few closed roads, we tried a 'track' on the GPS which led to an accidental heated exchange with a farmer - oops! We also tried some pretty iffy trails and called it quits when the speargrass was much higher than the roof and I couldn't see what I was driving in to.

Eventually we made our way back, dabbling with side roads along the way.

Image

I wimped out of this one, and then found out that 3 vehicles had apparently been swept into the river before us (whew!).

Image

All in all the X-trail did very well for itself, and earned its wash (which it well needed!).

Daniel,

Great area you live in, so we expect heaps more pics and storey's.

When I was last up there in 2001, the amount of water that comes down the normally tranquil creeks is amazing. And so much power, for such lower level water.

We were almost swept off the Alligator Crossing in about wheel deep water, in a fully loaded Pajero. The current was SO strong.

Anyway, great pics. But looking forward to seeing much, much more.

Re: Quick spin around the block

All types of vehicles get swept off Cahills Crossing at the East Alligator.....even road trains!! Not a good place to submerge a vehicle as there is also a healthy population of crocs.

The crossing is tidal and you have to pick your times. It can be dry or a metre deep on a big tide. In the wet season you wont even get near the place!

Interestingly the tide flows up fairly quickly, over the crossing(the crossing is 90km from the coast) and then stalls for a few minutes before turning and running back out, quickly gathering momentum. Some toyotas cross at the top of the tide when the water has stalled, otherwise you have to wait a while until it is quite shallow...too much sideward force on the vehicle easily washes them from the crossing.

It is very easy to misjudge this crossing even when quite shallow.

Would be great to see some more photos from up your way.
