Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades

As an update - I'm picking up my car from the dealer today. It ended up going for the service (budget @ $219). The car was not very dirvable with the slipping clutch when I took it in, so they said they would inspect and quote. First quote was $1814 - ($219 service, $200 battery - they said it was starting not to test well, $45 wipers, $40 front right wheel cap - previous one was stolen, $1310 for clutch kit installed - no flywheel).
Then after a while they called back and said the fly wheel had hot spots and needs to be replaced $1914. for genuine dual mass If I said no I'm taking it else where I still had to pay $900 for labour. If I said use an aftermarket single mass - they said Nissan don't recommend it, and they had never fitted one (I didn't want to be their test guniea pig). They said they would give it to me at cost (~$1600). I asked if the extended warranty covered it - they said no - its normal wear and tear, but by all means I can take the parts and get them inspected by some other clutch specialist, and if they find it a manufacture fault, they can give me a letter to pass on to Nissan Australia, when they will decide if I can get the warranty to cover the cost.
So all up I need to pay $3400 - the car is April 2006 STS T30 with only 50000kms.

Anyone know a specialist I can get to look at the flywheel? Or am I wasting my time? I can put a photo on here when I get it.

Re:

You can take it to any clutch dealer and they should be able to do the tests needed.
Don't forget to take the whole clutch to them including thrust bearing, pressure plate, clutch and flywheel.

I took the flywheel, and clutch kit to a clutch/brake place down the road from me - bottom line he said that is all wear and tear, no way I'll be able to claim a manufacture fault. The burn marks on the flywheel are as a result of riding the clutch - he said get in the car with you wife, and see how much of a clutch driver she is! He also said - after you next 50000kms don't go to the dealer - go to him, he will do it for a fraction of the price the dealer charges.

Re:

Still in Armidale, dropped the exy into Hardman Nissan this morning to check a couple simple things. Ouch. emoticon

They informed me I needed a new clutch. Maybe it's to be expected at 175,000km.

$1,300 to replace with clutch kit, and hoping that the flywheel is still okay or it's another $2,200. They ordered the bits today and I'll be getting it done this coming Monday.

Is there anything I need to think about in relation to getting this done? Having read this thread I see some people are opting for a heavier duty item, but I was supposed to be heading for home again on Monday, and don't really have the time/option to do anything else but fit the standard version. Hopefully I won't be adding up the kms like I have been from this point onwards and it won't be a bad decision.

Re:

I think the standard clutch would be OK for you Julie.

If you have the time , get another quote from a mechanic as the price for the flywheel seems excessive for a solid one, a dual mass costs that much.
The flywheel can be machined for under $100 and will be as good as new.
The clutch doesn't just go, it goes gradually.

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades

Hi,

I have a 2005 Nissan X-trail with 116K and my clutch is starting to slip - so I've read this forum and it seems like the way to go is convert to a solid flywheel

I want to get the Exedy sports tuff with solid flywheel - can anyone recommended a mechanic that will do this well around Parramatta, Blacktown, Hills area etc??

I looked at the exedy website and they also supply clutches to attach to the dual mass flywheel - is this recommended and will it be a lot cheaper?

Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,
Get the job done from a dedicated brake and clutch specialist, this way they know whats good for your Xy and can advise you on which way to go.
There is a good shop in St Marys (Specialised Brake and Clutch) if you come a bit further west and a few good ones in Penrith.
They can do the job in less than half a day.

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades

Thanks, will look into it!!

I'm actually not sure if the car is worth fixing or not - it needs 4 new tyres, new clutch and major service all of which will cost approx 4K - I'm thinking I'm better off putting that money into an upgrade for another car rather than spending it on my exy which has done 116 km

Re: Clutch issues and potential upgrades

Ho Ho Ho and Merry Christmas

unless your clutch is on the Go

38k ST-L manual 2009 T31 , clutch is slipping and getting worse very fast

Symptoms I've experienced and just put two and two together

I regularly drive with the cruise control on and sit back and enjoy my ride in to work
From brand new , occasionally the cruise control would disengage , especially if I just encountered a bit of uneven road , and have put it down to safety features.

Now It disengages all the time, and I have come to realize that the clutch is slipping and this causes the cruise to disengage.
if you experience this you too most likely have a clutch that is going.

I have been driving manuals for 30 years and never have I had one fail. My Daewoo is nearing 250k and the clutch is strong.

My X Trail on the other hand , for a $X$ has no strength in clutch as it is slipping and only done light to moderate work

I read your posts with great interest as I'm going to go hell for leather on Nissan and will take it to consumer affairs and fair trading court before I'm done

Tried to talk to my service manager today, he advises me that this is the way it is with clutches only lasting 40k these days before needing replacement. Just wait until I'm in his office next week

any advise on the best replacement for a vehicle that does do towing and will see some off road usage in the future Exedy and JWT sounds like the go from your posts

And I read on the American site for Xterra that the clutch housing is 275mm and clutch is 265mm , anyone comment on the Exy and clearance and possible over sized clutch as a replacement ??

Re:

Mine only lasted 43k. The x trail clutch is as weak as. Nissan will not do anything as they will blame the way it's driven.
I too have been driving manuals all my life and never experienced a clutch so weak.
The dual mass flywheel I believe is too weak for the car.

Things are going to get expensive I'm afraid.
