posticon NOS (Nitrous Oxide) in the X-Trail (QR25DE)

Hi Guys,

Some of us on this board are interested in all of the available performance modifications which can be done to the exy and this is one of them which I thought deserves a new thread (thanks for the tip Brett)

Nitrous Oxide or NOS as is commonly referred to by car enthusiasts has been successfully used in the exy with the QR25DE engine. (Terranismo was running NOS- wet system with 60 shot when he had his xtrail)

Now before we go into the details and if like me, you're completely new to the NOS modification idea, let's start with an overview of what this system actually is and what it does to the car.

I found a great source of information explaining the NOS set-up in detail:

Exploring Nitrous Part 1

Exploring Nitrous Part 2

Exploring Nitrous Part 3

The power gains as a result of this mod are enormous as the above overview suggests and this has been backed-up by the actual users as well.

The reality however is that our QR25DE engine can only be safely tuned to a maximum of 275-280HP (or 208KW) before things can break apart in the engine and serious damage is caused!

So, with this in mind, there is some serious consideration and research needs to be done before this mod is added to the list.

Please share your thoughts, links and any other sources that relate to the use of NOS in the QR25DE engine in particular and we can assess them together as we go along.

HERE is one of those sources showing the NOS set-up in the Nissan Altima with the same engine as ours.

Just be aware that it is VERY illegal to have a nos bottle in your car while on the street. If you get caught, the epa will come down on you very hard!

It is ok to have all the fittings on your car, you just cant have the bottle.

Thanks Matt. I didn't know this and I guess with this in mind the constant flow set-up is not an option.

HERE is a good article describing the legality of NOS coming from an Aussie manufacturer.

QLD and WA guys are out of this modification unfortunately LOL emoticon

Jalal, this is an easy fix. emoticon

Just paint the Nos bottle red and tell the boys in blue that it is a fire extinguisher. Do you really think most of them would know any different ???

Or you could polish it up and tell them it is a chrome touch-up spray can for all your chrome additions.

Come on mate, do it. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hiding the bottle or painting it is the last of my concerns about this mod, as the exy has plenty of spaces where this can be done, but keeping in mind that our forum does NOT support any illegal set-ups, we won't go through that here emoticon

I like the chrome touch-up idea though. hehehehe emoticon

"It's an LPG Conversion, officer" emoticon

If the police officer believes that, do you think a government official would also believe you, and give you the government rebate for getting it installed?

That's a story I'd like to read in the paper! emoticon

Regardless of legallity and the possibility of disconnecting it for on-road use, I do not think the insurance companies would like it emoticon
Maybe Shannons would be ok with it, but at a much higher premium I expect.

Ive seen quite a few QR25s with 100 shots on them. some of them fail, but so far, no one using a 75 shot has had any failures, other than non related issues.

Re: NOS (Nitrous Oxide) in the X-Trail (QR25DE)

ha, ever since fast and the frivolous hit the cinemas, NOS has become all the rage...

... to debunk some myths...

There is no green flame coming out of the exhaust pipe when you're dosing.

Taking the NOS bottole out and spraying an intercooler with it is a waste of time and NOS. I saw someone try that and the temperature difference on the intercooler was less than 1 degree (it was measured before and after).

The wise use NOS with properly tuned management. Simply plumbing in a NOS system will make the engine run lean when it get s dosed... not good.. You have to program your management to practically dump fuel in when the intake charge is dosed. The air-to-fuel ratio must remain in balance.

NOS will put alot of shock-loading onto not only engine components, but drivetrain parts too. I say this because Ive seen a NOSsed car during s dyno run. The tourque curve went vertical... such is the instantaneous response.

The application of NOS can catch the driver off guard, especially in the wet.

... still plenty of fun though... we used to call it the fast-forward button.
