posticon New Front rotors?

Hi all,
i did a search but couldn't find anything on the subject - sorry if it is a repeat.

I was in for my 50K service yesterday and they said that i require new disc pads and rotors, i didn't get them because it doesn't sound right but i was just wondering if anyone has had to replace their rotors at all and at how many K's?

Thanks,
Scott.

Re: New Front rotors?

I had mine replaced at about 90K. They had warped, probably due to my driving through puddles after heavy braking.... 50K sounds way to early, but it depends on the driving style, and the overall vehicle brake system. We have an XF Falcon in our family that has done in excess of 350K and has never had new rotors.

I'd get a second evaluation from an independant mechanic/tyre/brake place to be sure. They may just be trying to boost their pre-Christmas sales and targets!

That's what i was thinking because my mum has an auto xtrail at 70K and it hasn't been done.
Thanks for the reply.

Re: New Front rotors?

Hi Scott,

We have discussed the rotors replacement as part of THIS thread but am gonna leave this thread active to help the search engine results pick-up the word "rotors" which is missing from the existing thread, so thanks for starting it.

As Nath said, replacing rotors at 50K is WAY too early and the dealer should have at least offered you the option to have the rotors machined before trying to sell you new ones which will cost a fortune.

The factory rotors can be machined once only and if they haven't been machined before then take your exy to a local mechanic and they can do that for you on the spot.

Brake pad change at a 50K is OK for an AUTO and if your mother is heavy on brakes.

I replaced my front rotors at around 85K but only because they got damaged at the car wash place. They had been machined once at 60K service (local mechanic)

Re: New Front rotors?

My Exy has done about 81k & pads are about 60% (5mm left) as I was told at the 80k service.
I had a feel of the rotors when I rotated the wheels a few weeks ago & noticed there is a pronounced lip on the outer edge of the front rotors, so I am probably going to need the rotors machined soon.

Yep Dave, that raised lip on the outer edge is a good indication that the rotors need machining.

Re: New Front rotors?

This may come as a surprise - - it did to me !

I had to replace my front rotors (and pads) at less than 25K....

There was a pulsating in the steering wheel which felt to me like a previous incident (on another vehicle) when the rotors were warped.

Took it to the dealer and they (without hassle) replaced the front rotors and pads - at no charge to me.

It was 'suggested" the the undercoating that I had (spray) applied, may have over sprayed on the rotors, causing them to heat up and warp.......??? The back ones were / are still fine.

In any event, I have no complaints. And even if the reason was as "suggested" the dealer still stepped up to the plate for me.

So, I'm good to go (and stop) with a fresh start on the front.

Re: New Front rotors?

Roger,

I am not surprised at all to here this from you, as you guys in Canada seem to be having all sorts of problems with premature brake pad wear and faulty rotors. This has been reported by a number of xtrailers in Canada on the other forum. I think it is mainly attributed to the harsh weather conditions you guys have over there with plenty of snow.

It's good that you got them replaced under warranty cause other guys were not so lucky.

I don't think the undercoating would do this.

posticon Re: New Front rotors?

As mentioned briefly in another thread, my front rotors were deemed to be 0.1mm undersize at the 40K service. Has any other owners come across this ? The vehicle was just under the km's for this service and it was great to see new front fotors and pads covered under warranty.

My Exy is an auto which does a lot of short trips in the suburbs, which probably explains the high wear rate. Could there be some rotors from different batches or suppliers which are slightly softer in material composition? I was nearly going to measure them up before the service, next time will keep a closer eye on things.

Was told rotors are 28mm when new, mine measured up at 25.9mm just under the 26mm minimum. Can't believe only 2mm wear allowance, gone are the days of having 1 or 2 skims off the faces.
