Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?
I have just purchased a 20lt drum (of the Tru Gold 5w30) as per this link. I haven't tried the oil yet but at $70 for 20lt and Australian made was too hard to pass up.

Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?
Just read a post in this thread from Cam (hiimkam)
http://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/t129248,offset=34
He mentiones that 5W30 is too thin in our engines for summer and suggets a thicker high temp viscosity like 5W50 .
So just wondering what to get instead of Castrol Edge 5W30 that meets this?

Re:
I don't think it is true for a standard engine, but it maybe the case if you got a turbo bolted onto it (like Cam has) which may require a thicker oil, but I have never experienced any problems when I had the Castrol Edge 5W30 in the T30 and the dealer also confirmed it was a good choice of oil indeed.
I plan to switch to the Castrol Edge 5W30 in the T31 as soon as I hit 10,000kms.
In actual case, the service manual recommends 20W40 or 20W50 for hot areas, so am not sure if using 5W50 (or 0W50 as Cam stated on page 3 of this thread) is correct.

Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?
I have noticed that the last couple of services the oil level needs to be topped up just before the 10k with no smoke or leaks found and there is what sounds like some timing chain noise after the engine has been running for about half-hour. Let it sit for an hour or so and the noise is gone for the same half-hour until it heats up again and it never happened before changing over to the 5W30.
This sounds like the 5W30 oil is too thin for the pressure required by the timing chain tensioner (which relies on hydraulic pressure) when the engine is hot.

Re:
I don't think the timing chain noises are caused by the type of oil you use....I never had any timing chain noises and I switched to the 5W30 Castrol at 60,000kms
Anyway, it doesn't hurt to try and use thicker oil and see if it stops the noise, although I highly doubt it.

Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?
Those graphs show the 5W30 only suitable for ambient temps upto 15DegC but as we often get upto around 40 sometimes higher but rarely below -20 then it seems the 10W40 or 10W50 might be better.

That's not the recommendation on the Castrol Australia website.

Re:
Did they ask you if your car was petrol or diesel? or did you ask them what is the recommended oil viscosity for the petrol and for the diesel?
