Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?
I'd still flush the engine before changing to full synthetic just to be on the safe side and it's not like you need to worry about sludge dislodging inside your engine because you haven't done that much kms on it yet. This becomes a concern if you are to switch oil types after 100,000kms or so where there could be sludge build-up inside the engine and better left un-touched.
You can buy the engine flush fluid from any auto stores like supercheap auto and it comes with instructions.
Nulon Engine Oil Flush is one of such products.

Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?
OK, I bought the Castrol 5W30 fully synth and the Nulon. I flushed and changed this oil this evening, and it all went rather well (except for the gush of oil out the side when I took out the filter, but I was prepared for that!)
The old oil was dark and smelly!
Unfortunately I could only find Ryco filters at the 3 or 4 auto parts stores nearby. I'll keep an eye on the level.
Also, whatever oil filter guard mentioned in the manual appears to be missing from mine. I didn't have to remove anything to access the filter, and there are some obvious holes where something should screw on to the front right plastic bash plate thing. Any ideas where I can get one? There was a bit of dirt stuck on the flat surface under the filter (I gather from the dirt roads I do). I wouldn't want to put a rock through the oil filter when out in the bush!
I've also filled it up a touch full. I wasn't thinking because the manual said 5.4L when drained and filter replaced, and it was getting dark so I was in a hurry...
It's only a couple of mm higher than the high level on the dip stick, but below the "bend". Should I try and siphon some out somehow?
thanks

Hi Ray,
Please refer to THIS which discussed the best oil to use for the T31 diesel.

Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?
Hi all, it been a while, since I last posted. Having Work/Life balance issues but all is good.
Just to tell you that after using Amsoil Synthetic 0W30 and Amsoil Filter, I went 1 year and 20,000KM with no oil change. I sent the oil away to get tested... just because I was a bit skeptical with their claim and it past with flying colours. The oil was still good for that duration and still had more KM wear to be used. So for my $90C and once a year oil change paid out.
i seen the typo.. 0w20 for the jeep, 0w30 for the xey

Hi Michael,
Can you confirm the oil you used was 0W20 and not 0W30.
Cheers...

Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?
Cam, if I am reading this correctly you are paying what, 350 dollars for 5 litres of oil?
Thats one hell of an oil change mate
Edit ....Just to add to the topic, we have been running Castrol 0w-30w for about 18months, stock up when Trade sales at Repco, etc commence. Great oil, appears to be less engine tappet noise on start up.
Doing 10 thousand KM servicing changes.
