Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?

Ok. Changed my oil to fully synthetic.

Seemed OK at first, but after about 2500klm it's dropping oil like crazy.

An investigation by myself identified that the sump/pan gasket was leaking like a sieve. I can't see if the oil pump may be leaking (car is on the ground (no hoist) and difficult to see.

Also further to the rear of the sump seemes to be a lot of oil too. Not sure if this is splash or air blown oil from the sump whilst the car is in motion.

Will be taking it to the mechanic to hoist it to ensure no-where else is leaking. If only the sump I'll have the gasket replaced...if something more...well, I'll see.

Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?

So i was wanting to stick with the 10W30 that the mechanic for the previous owner used. But Castrol only sells the magnatec pro in drums, and not wanting to go with the pure mineral or the magnatec with the higher grade 10W40 i've jumped on the bandwagon and gone Castrol Edge 5w 30. Lets see how we go....

Munners96
Check that your oil filter is not leaking.
Many members here that are using the Ryco brand filter have found them to be faulty, the seal is useless.
Replace the oil filter first.
Read up on it in the respected thread, just do a search for Ryco oil filters and read up on it.
Cheers
Tony

Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?

I worked in a oil lab for 10 years checking the viscosity of most mineral oils that was sent into us from a wide range of machinery and no matter what brand od oil we tested not one of them was any good after 5000kms.

Well, I have elected to go with Amsoil Synthetic 0w30 and their filter. Once a year oil change. Cost $65, environmental waste of 1 filter and 4.3 litres of oil a year compared to 4 filter and 17.2 litres and a cost of $200. emoticon

Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?

I use a fully synthetic oil after experience with my previous vehicle. My Mazda Bravo dual cab had a sticky tappet problem from a cold start for the first 5 km or so. A change to full synthetic oil cured this completely. The car had 220,000 km on it when I sold it, and it was still running like new, everything original.

Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?

I was hoping to change the oil myself tomorrow morning to the fully synthetic... But I just came across one of Jalal's images http://img525.imageshack.us/i/11093107cv3.jpg/ which says that for hot areas, 20W40 and 20W50 are suitable!

The temperature here is never below 15C in the middle of the night (which the 5W40 appears to be rated at), and day times range between 28 - 35 in the shade!

Should I be using the 5W30 or something else? I do a fair bit of highway driving, 200 to 400 kms one way every long weekend. Other than that, the exy is a family car.

thanks for the advice emoticon

For the Australian climate 5W30 is the one to use.

Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?

Thanks Jalal.

I'll try and find out if they used a fully synthetic at the garage last time. The sticker says it was Penrite, but they don't give a rating or anything else...

Re: Best oil to use - synthetic or mineral ?

The best thing to do if you are not sure and about the oil you currently have there is to get the engine flushed and start from fresh using the synthetic oil.
