Re: Re:

Hi Jalalski,

As mentioned in another thread I am totally going thru the same things with my new XTrail.

When I take off it seemed to rev high and lull about 40-60 kph. I rang the Nissan Dealership about my 1000km service as I couldn't get the car to them until about 1500km, which they said no worries, but the sooner the better and I shouldn't leave it too much over. Anyway I mentioned the lull at about 40-60 kph and the service guy said he's never heard of it, but it could be my driving manner, as I did own a more powerful Calais before. I would have to adjust to the new car. He said he will still have a look though.

I took his advice and now when I take off I actually ease off a little, but not too much and keep the same consistent pressure on the accelerator pedal. It drives now more smoother, faster and doesn't rev really high any more. It actually seems to go quicker now. No lull or very little it seems at 40-60 kph. So I'm really happy now. Still get them to check it out though. Also the car is probably now loosening up a little now. I think I'm finding the optimal pedal pressure now in different circumstances.

Must admit the car has some pick up and go at higher cruising speeds, especially with the manual mode. Quite surprised, thought it would be more gutless, but it wasn't. As for going up highway hills in mountains, I was quite surprised how good it was. Even the automatic kick down going up hills is great.

Not too sure if I should mention this in this thread, but must admit maybe it's too early, but according to my fuel average on the dashboard I'm only getting 11-13 l/100km, but by the fuel gauge I have a feeling that the dashboard average isn't that accurate as my Calais was the other way as it was showing too good fuel economy. Maybe as my first heavy foot approach has now been adjusted to the now more efficient approach to the X-Trail, may have had something to do with it.

Anyway it's good to see I'm not the only one noticing these little things.

Wal

Hi Wal,

Thanks for sharing your experience with the CVT.

To be honest with you, I have been driving my Series 4 CVT since late June 2011 and for the life of me, I still can't get used to the slack and gutless acceleration and the feeling that the car always moves off the mark in higher gear.

I am now driving it in AUTO mode and this makes the whole car feel even more heavy.

I am not sure how patient I can be, but am starting to hate the CVT as an option in short suburban drives! It is awesome on longer trips and even with the cruise control engaged, but for suburban street driving it has started to tick me off indeed!

I can't get over how good the standard automatic transmission was in my previous T30 model and when I compare the T31 CVT take-off to that of the T30, it feels like a huge tank on wheels emoticon

Am taking the car for the first 10K (6 months) service in 2 weeks, so am gonna mention all of this to the guys at Nissan, but am pretty sure they gonna blame my driving style.

Yep, me too.

Loves the freeway, not so around town, the revs are up and down like a yo yo but speed and pick up is constant but sluggish and nowhere as responsive as the T30.

Re: Re:

Hi Jalalski,

Firstly, thanks for getting rid of the quote mistake I did.

Re the tank suburban driving compared to the awesome long trip driving ... I couldn't agree more. I am sure that if I had a bad day at work, I think the car is different, then when I am in a good mood. Apparently I know a guy had a CVT Mitsubishi Outlander and he said it took about a year until he got used to it. So I'll make another comment in about a few months time. Also when I drive off now I make sure I listen to a radio song more closely until I get to 60kph and it just seems to go smoother ... LOL ... :-)

I know this it isn't the thread, but what fuel economy are you getting? I'll do a search for the Fuel Economy Thread now.

Yeah Wal, the fuel economy figures are posted in the corresponding fuel consumption thread, the CVT is a petrol guzzler during short city/suburban drives.

Re: X-Trail T31 - CVT transmission

Hi Jalalski,

Thanks for the advice re the 1000km service. On the weekend drove everywhere in the car and really really impressed. Fuel economy coming down. Anyway I have been pretty paranoid re the CVT and on you tube found a clip re a CVT whine on a Nissan Alama or similar. There were one or two re other cars. Surprisingly no X-Trails.

Anyway I decided to have a listen to mine and thought I could hear a slight whine when pressing the accelerator and off. Yes in the Garage with the Air-conditioner OFF and no noise around. It mainly does it at 700-1300rpm. Ever so so light and not really a whine, but a fan belt deeper sound. No rattles, clunks or anything and doors closed. Engine sounds good, throughout the ranges, although when cold a little tappy. I tried to record it, but couldn't as it was very quite.

Being paranoid as I am ... LOL ... with my partner telling me I need a life ... and as my km's were increasing towards the 1500km mark and still having to take the car in for the first 1000km service, I decided to call in to the Nissan Dealer Service just in case. The sound is no where near what is on YouTube and can't even hear it when I drive.

One of the head mechanics came out and drove it and listened to it and did notice it, all be it had to strain to hear it with everything turned off & doors closed. He was a mechanic at Honda for many years and knew about the CVT problems with the CRV's. He actually says the XTrail is good and only ever had problems with one in the last few years.

He stated I have nothing to worry about as the noise is actually coming from the front motor area and is a $%^&F&% ... whatever ... I think he mentioned the actuator /solenoid ??? ... not sure. He suggested to put my head towards the front of the motor where you could hear it. I hope in regarding to the noise and nothing more sinister ... LOL

He said the CVT sounds and drives normal and there is no problems with me driving above the 1000km when not serviced. He stated the car is driving and acting perfectly. So I am for now happy and trying to make sure I don't develop a phobia. He said when I bring it in eventually he'll have another look at it for my sake.

Question Finally:
Does a new T31 Series 4 CVT have any slight low whine or sound at all, or is it suppose to be perfectly silent? Sorry for my ignorance but have never owned a CVT and just come from a 200KW VE 5 speed 2007 Calais.

slight whine is fine, if you keep hearing it, pull over and get some "wine" emoticon

It's the clunks and metal sounds you don't wanna hear!

Re: X-Trail T31 - CVT transmission

Still struggling to see what the problem is here unless Nissan have made "improvements" since 2008. As I said earlier I leave ours in "auto" mode so everything works when it needs to, when taking off from the lights if there is nothing in front of me I push the go pedal fairly smartly to 3000rpm then start backing off as 80kph comes up very quickly. Normally all other traffic is left well behind. I have been driving like this for 3 years / 40000 klm. Fuel consumption from new is 9.1L / 100 K mainly around town driving.

Re:

Barney,

I have been speaking to CVT drivers and nearly all of the ones who upgraded from the standard/conventional Automatic transmission to the CVT (specifically in the xtrail) noticed what I am noticing and have been noticing since June last year (remember, I am comparing it to the T30 auto I had):

1. Sluggish take off (I don't floor it at the lights)
2. The whole car feels heavy at take-off.
3. The CVT gear selection has a mind of its own when approaching and negotiating a turn and when I have to accelerate at the same time, it seem the whole car dips due to lack of power (and wrong gear selection)and then all of a sudden surges/launches forward as if it got injected with a large dose of steroids!
4. Then we have the power loss at steep road climbs which never used to happen with the auto T30
5. Fuel consumption is dead high for such a refined engine and transmission. I am talking about suburban driving 100% (with zero city and highway runs). My V6 Mercedes doesn't burn as much fuel as the 2.5 4 cylinder T31 does....it is shocking!
