Re: Wheel Bearings

While the symptoms on our X-Trail are different to others (high pitched squealing similar to brake-pad level indicator, but increases in loudness the longer the trip is, as opposed to rumbling noise - but then the rumbling noise could easily be masked by the BFG's - and the high pitched squeal stops when braking (change in load on bearings?) but can still be heard while doing 110 on the freeway, even over the wind and tyre noise!), I suspect our left rear wheel bearing is on it's way out.

Also noticed the other weekend while rotating wheels and trying to adjust hand-brake tension that the rear wheels did not rotate freely (got tighter every 1/2 turn) - but I don't know if this has something to do with the 4WD system or not (is it still engaged when the ignition is off but in Auto 4wd mode?). At the 80,000 service I changed the rear 4wd diff oil. Now it's at 92,000.

I expect that to be something to do with the differential action and the spinning of the pinion gears

That's good news. I wasn't looking forward to having to fix/replace more things...

edit: turned out the squealing noise was the brake pad level indicator strip rubbing against the front rotor. New pads all 'round and new front slotted rotors and noise is now gone.

Re:

Came across an interesting post on the Nissan Australia facebook page today.

A guy has been without his 2008 T31 exy Ti for almost 8 weeks waiting for a faulty front wheel bearing to be replaced. Apparently there are NONE in Australia (yet another part that Nissan decided not to stock on).

The dealer called him up and said the courier has lost the wheel bearing, so he gonna have to wait another 3-4 weeks before they can get another one in. They told him, rather than waiting for your 2008 T31 exy to be fixed, how about we help you buy a NEW ONE LOL emoticon

At least they gave him a Micra to drive around emoticon

So there you go, we will soon be faced with an option to upgrade our xtrails should Nissan not be apply to supply a spare part, at this rate, we will driving a brand new exy every 6 months or so. hahahaha emoticon

(Scot, are you reading this???) emoticon emoticon

Re: Wheel Bearings

Hi, I haven't read this whole post so apologies if I'm duplicating here, but I was surprised to read about the low stock problem!

My front bearings died miserably at about 60000kms. I had them replaced and that got rid of the shonky bearing noise that developed over a couple of weeks, but also a slight whine that I had noticed since buying the car at about 40000kms. It also felt smoother. There were no issues with supply then (early 2010).

They did however bend the backing plate, so there was a horrible screech at certain speeds / turning. They fixed that for free of course.

Re:

Iain,

The supply shortage is for the T31 bearings, not the T30 ones.

Although the reason why they don't carry wheel bearings is that they shouldn't need changing for another 70-100 thousand k's.

Re: Wheel Bearings

Does anybody have an old bearing so I can see what (if any) manufacturer numbers are on it and find an alternative?
