Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer

There were in the past 2 different tow bars for the X-Trail, one a 1,000 Kgs rated one which was fixed and a 2,000 Kgs one. The latter is the detachable type so it depends what was put on the vehicle. Mine is a Hayman Reece detachable which is rated to 2,000 Kgs with tow ball weight of 150 Kgs. I can imagine that the 1,000 Kgs version would only be allowed 75 Kgs on the tow ball. When I got mine fitted in 2006 Nissan told me they did not do the 1,000 Kgs tow bar any longer.

Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer

Ron,

As far as I know Nissan always and only used the detachable one for the xtrail since I got mine back in 2003.

It was the only option available back then, so am not sure if what you have stated applies to earlier models (probably back in 2001 and 2002)?

The Hayman Reece is detachable and so is the Genuine Nissan one which I have.

Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer

So it may not have been Nissan selling a 1,000 Kgs tow bar but when I had mine fitted at Matador in Castle Hill, they asked if I wanted a fixed 1,000 Kgs rated one or detachable 2,000 Kgs one. I have a Hayman Reece 2,000 Kgs rated one so did they do a 1,000 kgs one? I have a friend here with an Exy who has a fixed tow bar - I'll check with him where he had his fitted and who made it.

Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer

I took the following pictures of a mates X-trail with this fixed tow bar. It must be fixed to a bar that runs inside the rear bumper. I wouldn't put 150Kgs on this:

I still don't know for sure who made these but suspect it is hayman reese.

Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer

Thanks for the pics Ron.

That's one wierd looking towbar for sure and I have not seen it in Australia at all. The only other similar model is sold in the UK and it is fixed too, however it still uses the chassis attachement points and not the bumper frame. This one doesn't look like it is connecting to the chassis at all (unless it's not showing in the pics). I wouldn't be towing anything serious with this towbar.

Check out the "standard" tow bar page of Hayman Reese. The website is here, select "Products" then "Standard Towbars".

Steve - do you have one of these, or the hitch receiver type?

Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer

G'day Ron

My towbar is the hitch receiver type.

The "standard" ones look like they are suited ONLY for a 6 x 4 trailer...

Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer

hi Steve,

There should be a compliance plate somewhere but I would have thought since you have a proper hitch receiver your towbar is 2,000 kgs rated, with 150 kgs towball weight. You are correct, the other towbar I wouldn't even stand on!!

Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer

Hi Ron

Yep, certainly the tow bar is rated high .... But the 2004 xcy is only rated at 75kg tow ball weight...

(According to the handbook)

cheers

Steve..

Re: Towing a jayco camper trailer

I'd ignore the handbook in your case Steve, why would Nissan fit a 2000 Kgs / 150Kgs download rated tow bar to a vehicle that by law is rated less? Check which version of the manual you have as European models aren't allowed to tow as much as we are, let's not even discuss Roger's towing options in Canada.
