Re: Camping Mt Mee - Archers Point
Dave,
How was Mt Mee? I was up there maybe 4 months ago and it was very dry on the western side of the range. The eastern side was still very green.
I've been to Landcruiser mountain park twice, when I owned a Suzuki Jimny (stock). I own an x-trail now. It's good fun, and a nice property as well. Unfortunately (in my opinion), I wouldn't expect an x-trail to get that far on most of the tracks. We drove some of the easy/moderate tracks which are still quite challenging. The x-trail will lose out because of the ground clearance and most importantly the lack of low range. There are some pretty steep hills that you'd have pretty much no hope of doing in high range.
But having said that, there may still be enough do-able tracks to keep you busy and it's a great spot in any case. Just go with someone with a more capable car and recovery gear.
One technique I learnt and used a few times while there was a "hill stall recovery". Worth practising on small hill before tackling a big one. See here: http://www.pps.net.au/4wdencounter/4wdtech/hills.html
It's a bit daunting at first as you lunge back down the hill, but it's the safest way to get your way out. It'd be even more daunting without low range , but would still work I assume.
