Re: HUB Separating from Axle
Hi, its awhile since I posted but I still keep an eye on things:
I am only self taught, but I have done a lot of mechanical work over the years.
I believe that the concern about the distance between the split pin and the nut on the stub axle is unfounded, and has become just a little "over the top".
Let me explain as I understand it:
The cars I grew up with all had tapered wheel bearings with the nut only tightened not much more than finger tight and backed off half a turn or so, to ensure not to over tighten the bearing. The split pin in that instance was hard up against the special "washer" and nut. In that instance the split pin was vital in order to stop the nut unwinding.
The X-trail uses a very different system. Its wheel bearings are NOT tapered as I understand it but are traditional roller bearings. They are held in place by the nut that is tightened very considerably to a pre-determined amount using a tension wrench. In this case the split pin really plays no part in holding the nut in place. Its role is to be a last resort safety pin.
The problems detailed in this thread all relate to either the bearing wearing out or the nuts not been sufficiently tightened. Bearing wear can be influence by the vehicles use and continual off road, dust or water crossings will undoubedly hasten their demise.
My X-trail has now done almost 140,000k and my bearings are still original with no sign of wear or problems todate. However, I am keeping an eye on them. (I still have my original brake disks also).
I would be interested to hear any comment from a qualified mechanic/engineer on whether or not I am correct.

Re: HUB Separating from Axle
John,
Your general assessment of this pin is correct and it will only become a concern when one of the wheel bearings is shot and ignored, in which case it will pose a great risk to the hub separating from the axle due to the way this safety pin is designed and that is what we're discussing in this thread.
Under normal driving conditions with wheel bearings working as they should, it's not an issue, but as soon as the wheel bearing gives way and the car is driven for an extended period of time, the risk of major damage is magnified by the way this locking pin is designed which would allow the locking nut to become loose.

Re: HUB Separating from Axle
Hi Guys,
When I took off the front wheel from the Red Bull yesterday I was very happy to see that Nissan has addressed the gap between the hub nut and the locking pin and they now have a nice crown in place locking any possible movement.
I will post a pic tonight and this crown could be the solution to all T30 problems, as I presume it would fit the T30 hub nut without any problems.

Re: HUB Separating from Axle
Hi Guys,
Sorry for the delay.
Here is a pic showing the crown I mentioned in my post above
Someone with a T30 may want to try and fit it on their hub to see if it fits.

I reckon it'll be easier for you to order it from your local dealer

Re:
Bob,
The Nissan T30 bearings part number and price are mentioned in THIS thread.
