Re: Engine oil choice and Warranty claim
Sorry William, but this dealer doesn't know what he's talking about.
The 5W30 oil is one of the recommended grades in the service manual and the one that has been mentioned to improve fuel economy. (see below pages from the service manual)
Also refer to the Castrol website where the 5W-30 Synthetic is the oil grade recommended for the xtrail.
I'm taking my exy for the 80K service soon and will supply my own 5W-30 synthetic and they don't have a problem with that, so I guess the dealer you have been speaking to is trying to move some of the Nissan oil he has in stock, hence the "fantasy claim"

This is so funny. You are getting your car service at the usual place right? And guess what that's also the place I rang up.
Give me a name and I'll have a word to them when I go there, but please don't tell me it was the new lady receptionist LOL

Re: Engine oil choice and Warranty claim
Jing,
If a mecahnic can issue an invoice proving that the oil and filter have been changed then you will have no problems, otherwise am afraid Nissan will have every right to doubt that you ever changed the oil in case of a warranty claim because there is nothing to prove that you did.

Re: Engine oil choice and Warranty claim
After just having done another oil change myself (all but the last 2 were done by the dealer) I'd say it would be good to do oil changes a bit sooner than the standard service schedule recommends. Both times our oil came out very dark brown, no idea what it was like when the dealer was doing it...
I imagine that the Exy is pretty hard on the oil, having a long stroke. Although ours has never "used" a drop of oil.
All dealer oil changes up to and including the 80,000km service were the Nissan 7.5w30 oil, the 90 and 100,000km oil changes have been Castrol Edge 5w30 and Nissan oil filter.

Re: Engine oil choice and Warranty claim
Hi Shawn,
You're right about our engine being hard on the oil and I checked my oil yesterday (after only 3,000kms since I had it changed at the 80K service) and it was black as well.
I use the Castrol Synthetic 5W30. I have always changed oil every 10K from one service to the other, but after seeing this, I think am gonna start changing it every 5K to be safe, especially now that the engine is getting older.
