Re: Weird Noise When Braking
Do I hear another Nissan Recall coming on?
I also experienced this yesterday afternoon. It was an almighty metallic clunk that I could feel very noticably. I am not sure if I felt it through the floor or the pedal. I know if it was the pedal then it would be ABS activating, and have experienced this before, but this clunk was very different. For want of a better description, it felt like someone had run into the back of the X-Trail. I was on sealed road at the time, but had been driving on unsealed road earlier. It only did it the once. I do have a towbar fitted, and there was nothing on the road that might've flicked up and caused the sound. I used to have tape around the slide-out towbar to prevent it rattling on unsealed roads, which has mostly disappeared, however the clunk did not sound like the normal rattle I get from the towbar.
Perhaps I need to check my rear brake pad thickness, however there isn't any squealing or anything else unusual about the brakes... I've done 58,000k's on the stock rear pads, and I think I changed the front ones (to EBC) sooner than others have changed theirs, and the rears still had heaps of life left in them back then.

Re: Weird Noise When Braking
Rich,
I am betting it's the rear brake pads going bust. The xtrail doesn't produce any squeaking/warning noises before the brake pads go bust. They straight away produce this grinding noise. 58K on stock rears is pretty damn good and I know you like to squeeze every factory part right until the end before you do something about it LOL (just like your Toyo tyres)

Re: Weird Noise When Braking
Lol yes, loose things often do go clunk, especially when there are loose/missing bolts.
I have has a similar problem, but on a different vehicle. Turned out to be the d-shackle on the tow bar sliding from side to side on corners.
Bit of insulation tape was a cheap fix.
