After the large amount of rain and rough conditions, there wasn't a huge amount of beach to drive on, even at dead low tide. The rough conditions have caused there to be a "vertical wall" of sand between the beach and the dunes if this makes any sense. There were also lots of fallen branches lying arround, especially towards the north of the island - care not to puncture tyres. The entrance to the beach was ok (no signs of any large holes) but it looked like a digger of some sort had fixed a few dangerous spots. (the beach was closed a few weekends ago) there was a large water crossing (about 1/2 foot deep) to get to the inland track due to the resent massive rain fall. This didn't pose any problems. This was my forth time beach driving and I found 1st gear (manual) with revs between 2000 and 3000 rpm and "auto"4wd setting to work best for me. As the sand was pretty chopped up you couldn't really get enough momentum for 2nd gear (it was sitting on approx 2000 revs when in 2nd. Therefore it just didn't seem to have the torque. When you lost momentum the revs just kept dropping to the point of having to change gear anyway. Next time I will try reduced tyre preasures. No clearance problems encountered (with 2inch lift springs). Bash plate also worked a treat to protect the underbody. Hope this info helps nondisclosed_email@example.com (iroczvinnie)Tue, 11 Sep 2007 13:38:18 +0000 Re: Bribie Island 25 April 2007https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000456,from=rss#post2000456https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000456,from=rss#post2000456Hey Tony Sounds like a great day, when i took the exy to bribe island last year (the day before the QLD photo shoot) the same problem with the big hole on the beach entrance almost clipped the guied post on the way out, one other exy the day i went, we exited the beach at the same time and both pulled up to look for any damage this hole may have caused. And i found out that the exy just couldn't snatch a landcruiser out lol (I told the bloke my car is only small)had a blast though, it was my first offroad trip in the exy. Let us know if ya plan to go again soon i'll pack up the troops and join ya for a day out. quote:Does Bribie have a car wash like like the one up at Noosa when you come off the beach from double Island point? I'm fairly sure bribe doesn't have a car wash ("Someone correct me if i'm wrong")i used the car lovers at Caboolture.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Big Rig)Wed, 09 May 2007 10:15:08 +0000 Re: Bribie Island 25 April 2007https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000242,from=rss#post2000242https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000242,from=rss#post2000242Rob, the good thing about having an annual pass (for me) is that if you wake up in the morning and the sun is shining on high, it's only 3/4 hour drive and you're drivin' on the sand at Bribie. Especially now there's no rain the lawn doesn't need mowing as often, yeehah! nondisclosed_email@example.com (BlackThunda)Tue, 01 May 2007 15:39:38 +0000 Re: Bribie Island 25 April 2007https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000241,from=rss#post2000241https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000241,from=rss#post2000241Thanks Tony, would be great to go with someone else who has already been there. Sort of booked out for most the weekends for the next couple of months especially with house renos but will give you a PM if we get a chance to sneak away. Will probably be after Jamies trip which looks likly to be on June 2 Jamie the more the merrier I say. nondisclosed_email@example.com (robot95)Tue, 01 May 2007 14:29:24 +0000 Re: Bribie Island 25 April 2007https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000215,from=rss#post2000215https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000215,from=rss#post2000215Let me know if you go guys, if I'm free I would love to come for a drive as well! nondisclosed_email@example.com (BlackThunda)Mon, 30 Apr 2007 21:08:27 +0000 Re: Bribie Island 25 April 2007https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000208,from=rss#post2000208https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000208,from=rss#post2000208Hi Robot, I dont know if there is a car wash on Bribie - sorry. Used the tank water and pressure washer when I got home. I would not mind doing another trip up there later. I would be much more confident of snatching out another xtrail rather than a ford territory!! ' PM me if you are looking for a buddy to go. We stuck to the hard stuff mainly - I would be interested in doing the track to the lighthouse picnic spot next time. The exy did well on the beach near noosa - see the rainbow beach trip report. Havn't taken our exy on the sand yet will have to one day soon but I think I will definatly have to go with a buddy the first time. Does Bribie have a car wash like like the one up at Noosa when you come off the beach from double Island point? I'm glad you saw another Exy I was up at Teewah on the week end with mates from work they took what they call real 4WD (Prado) actually not true one guy brought his Rav4 up Saturday afternoon and that seem to do Ok. I had to leave the exy for Liz but it would of been very loney if I took it as I didn't see 1 X-trail the whole weekend. Low tied was mid-day and there was heaps of good sand to drive on to get up to double island for lunch have a couple of good hours and have a comfortable trip back. Best swimming was on the south side of the point. Went snorking and saw the biggest logger head turtel ever (was able to get close enough to touch it) a couple of green turtles (a bit quick/timmered) as well as a pair of manta rays, gar fish I think they are called and all the usual little stuff around the rocks. When standing on the light house point we also saw 3 dolphins 1 was only a littely. Had to be very carful snokeling as there was a terrible rip about 10m out from the rocks. Water would of been just a tad chilly with out the wet suit.nondisclosed_email@example.com (robot95)Mon, 30 Apr 2007 07:59:26 +0000 Re: Bribie Island 25 April 2007https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000175,from=rss#post2000175https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000175,from=rss#post2000175quote:Tony0 wrote: We did fill the hole - we put the xtrail in it hahahahahahaha nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Sun, 29 Apr 2007 21:22:58 +0000 Re: Bribie Island 25 April 2007https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000165,from=rss#post2000165https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000165,from=rss#post2000165We did fill the hole - we put the xtrail in it It was a big hole or more accurately a dip right as you came off the track onto the beach proper. Too much traffic to fill it in. If we had taken it a bit slower it would have been OK. But I guess we were paranoid about getting bogged. With a bit more practice on sand we may have a more confidence to take it slower - this was only our second time on the beach. Next trip will be in the bush - I think Tony0nondisclosed_email@example.com (Tony0)Sun, 29 Apr 2007 13:14:00 +0000 Re: Bribie Island 25 April 2007https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000136,from=rss#post2000136https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000136,from=rss#post2000136Well done Tony. This would have been the correct 4wd procedure anyway. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Sat, 28 Apr 2007 21:23:09 +0000 Bribie Island 25 April 2007https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000124,from=rss#post2000124https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2000124,from=rss#post2000124Hi All, Took the Exy for its second trip on the beach on Anzac day. Loaded the family, picnic gear and shade, picked up some friends and their two kids in a Ford Territory and off we went. My friend in the Territory was very nervous as he had never taken it anywhere near off-road. We followed the guide notes from the dirty weekend book to find where to go...if you buy your permit on line there is no need to go past the caravan park ( we followed the instructions like lemmings ). We stopped with everyone else and dropped our tyre pressures (25 psi). The road to the beach was no problem, a bit bumpy but no probs. The entrace to the beach was OK except for the big hole I drove into , my friend followed me in. Some nice big bangs and a bounce and we were through and onto the hard stuff - where we stopped and had a look to see what damage we had done. A Mazda tribute must have done the same thing as they were also stopped with the bonnet up. We saw one other exy and no other Territorys. We got onto the beach right on low tide so had nice hard sand on the way up. Took a spin up the beach and the turned around to find a spot on the beach to have lunch closer to the exit as the tide was starting to come in and did not want to have too far to come back in the softer sand. It was a perfect day and had a great picnic. and a good day ...till we left the beach On the exit, that hole that my wife had told me to avoid on the way in, was suddenly unavoidable (she was now driving) It was a bigger bang this time - especially for our friends Territory. [SUZ - I feel the need to defend myself - is it an adequate defence to suggest that the hole got bigger during the day from increased use??? ] Sometimes momentum is not such a good thing! [SUZ - but it got us out the other side of the hole!!] The Territory was playing up all over the place on the track to the carpark - sounding terrible, loss of power, shaking etc - my mate was not happy....it turned out to be massive sand build up on the wheels causing the stability control to kick in and retard ignition, apply abs all over the place - once we cleared the sand from the wheels with a couple of sticks it was fine. The exy handled the softer sand no problems - we followed a Patrols wheel tracks so scraped the belly a bit but no signs of overheating (Auto 2nd and 4WD Auto) Any way we had a good day out and I can recommend Bribie as a good trip - just watch those holes!! [SUZ - especially the ones that grow...] I think we will go slower next time and hopefully not get stuck.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Tony0)Fri, 27 Apr 2007 23:23:17 +0000
