Bribie Island 25 April 2007
Hi All,
Took the Exy for its second trip on the beach on Anzac day.
Loaded the family, picnic gear and shade, picked up some friends and their two kids in a Ford Territory and off we went.
My friend in the Territory was very nervous as he had never taken it anywhere near
off-road.
We followed the guide notes from the dirty weekend book to find where to go...if you buy your permit on line there is no need to go past the caravan park ( we followed the instructions like lemmings ).
We stopped with everyone else and dropped our tyre pressures (25 psi). The road to the beach was no problem, a bit bumpy but no probs. The entrace to the beach was OK except for the big hole I drove into , my friend followed me in. Some nice big bangs and a bounce and we were through and onto the hard stuff - where we stopped and had a look to see what damage we had done. A Mazda tribute must have done the same thing as they were also stopped with the bonnet up.
We saw one other exy and no other Territorys.
We got onto the beach right on low tide so had nice hard sand on the way up.
Took a spin up the beach and the turned around to find a spot on the beach to have lunch closer to the exit as the tide was starting to come in and did not want to have too far to come back in the softer sand.
It was a perfect day and had a great picnic.
and a good day ...till we left the beach
On the exit, that hole that my wife had told me to avoid on the way in, was suddenly unavoidable (she was now driving) It was a bigger bang this time - especially for our friends Territory. [SUZ - I feel the need to defend myself - is it an adequate defence to suggest that the hole got bigger during the day from increased use??? ]
Sometimes momentum is not such a good thing! [SUZ - but it got us out the other side of the hole!!]
The Territory was playing up all over the place on the track to the carpark - sounding terrible, loss of power, shaking etc - my mate was not happy....it turned out to be massive sand build up on the wheels causing the stability control to kick in and retard ignition, apply abs all over the place - once we cleared the sand from the wheels with a couple of sticks it was fine.
The exy handled the softer sand no problems - we followed a Patrols wheel tracks so scraped the belly a bit but no signs of overheating (Auto 2nd and 4WD Auto)
Any way we had a good day out and I can recommend Bribie as a good trip - just watch those holes!! [SUZ - especially the ones that grow...] I think we will go slower next time and hopefully not get stuck.
