Paid about $175 ea and the mechanic thought they were a bit pricey! Seem to do well in dry and wet. Off road we only really use the occasional gravel track and no complaints. Not as good on the gravel as the old Grandtrak AT2's we bought the car with but those tyres were very noisy. Before the MA-P1s we had a set of Hankook Dynapro HP's, which were also fairly reasonably priced and decent onroad tyres. The MA-P1 has a very similar pattern to the Dynapro HP. I should really get around to buying a spare set of steel or mag wheels and put some AT tyres on it for when we go away into the rougher stuff but I don't think the HT tyres are that bad for the occasional dirt track.nondisclosed_email@example.com (DJR9000)Tue, 02 Oct 2012 20:38:21 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2067036,from=rss#post2067036https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2067036,from=rss#post2067036and the fact your mostly deaf from your vw days nondisclosed_email@example.com (mrbump)Tue, 02 Oct 2012 17:55:15 +0000 Re:Firestone Destinationshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2066867,from=rss#post2066867https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2066867,from=rss#post2066867well i've done about 6000km on the firestones now and i love them ,they have good grip in the wet and fuel consumption figures are better than what i was getting with the tranpaths, yes they are a little noisier , more so around round abouts and corners ,but after driving a few years in 4wds its not a big issue to me, so i'm one happy chappy with them nondisclosed_email@example.com (podderick)Tue, 25 Sep 2012 23:52:24 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2064935,from=rss#post2064935https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2064935,from=rss#post2064935quote:cooch t31 wrote: The Mazda rims look good on the old girl, I like. Ended up fitting a set of Pirelli Scorpion ATR’s in a 215/80R15 size. Unfortunately these tyres were just a little over the $200 mark so I will post up some more details and a few Pics in the appropriate thread. Thanks to John (JKS) for his very helpful post above. It really helped us with making our decision on tyre size. For those T30 owners who are running 15 inch rims and who may be thinking of new tyres, I hope that some of my research may assist. I did manage to find a number of quality tyres with an All-Terrain pattern for under $200 without too much running around. Some of the other tyres that I was mainly looking at were the General Grabber AT2 and the Hankook Dynapro ATM in a 215/75R15 size. I was quoted less than $200 for those tyres as well as the Maxxis Bravo 751 in either a 215/75R15 or a 225/75R15 size. Ultimately, I just couldn’t go past the Pirelli’s in the exact size I wanted for only few extra dollars. Hope this helps someone. Yep quote:I was wondering if you have had any problems or issues with the larger tyres rubbing or fouling on the car anywhere? No, not that we have noticed at all. Keep in mind that we have the heavy duty springs fitted, so there would be a little more room under the guards than with standard springs. quote:I was also wondering if you have noticed any affect on the acceleration or gearing after fitting them? Also have you noticed any difference in braking ability at all? I had been a little concerned about these factors too, but to be honest, I can't say there is any noticeable difference in any of the above. We haven't been out on any steep slopes since fitting the new tyres (a week ago) though, and if you were going to notice, I think that would be the ultimate test. On first impressions, I think any differences would be hard to pick up without tech testing gear. Like I said in my last post, I'd try and get hold of the Hercules Terra Trac in 215/75r15 if you're going to test fit other sizes to suss it all out. They were available in this smaller size, and for the price I was given (after a lot of bargaining), I thought they looked like an excellent tyre. In terms of going any bigger, I really can't comment as we haven't gone there. The 225/75r15 decision was based on feedback in the X-Trail tyre threads - it seemed to be the biggest tyre size that did not present any issues for T30 owners (other than a few commenting on minor rubbing at full lock as you have queried - we haven't experienced this). I hope that helps. Let us know what you end up fitting.nondisclosed_email@example.com (JKS)Thu, 03 May 2012 08:12:04 +0000 Re: Budget (sub $200) Tyreshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2061894,from=rss#post2061894https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2061894,from=rss#post2061894Hey John, are these new tyres mounted on the factory steel rims? We are just about to replace the original Toyo’s on our manual T30 X-Trail this week and I was wondering if you have had any problems or issues with the larger tyres rubbing or fouling on the car anywhere? I am looking at a couple of different brands and sizes of tyre; including a 225/75/15, which I will test fit at the tyre place. I like the tyre size you have fitted but I was also wondering if you have noticed any affect on the acceleration or gearing after fitting them? Also have you noticed any difference in braking ability at all? Really keen to hear your thoughts on this. I believe the Toyos previously fitted were the original tyres (we bought our vehicle at 43000km) and with a stop-gap second hand pair to get us through 2011 while we were overseas (parents and in-laws shared the car while we were gone), they would've traveled ~75000km on the original 4 and out to 86000km when finally changed. After a lot of research, I had been trying to track down a Hercules Terra Trac AT which I had been quoted ~$135ea before we went away. These are sourced from the states and have nice aggressive looking tread backed by solid reviews (the few I could find). Unfortunately I couldn't get hold of the 225/75r15's anywhere in Australia (believe me, I tried!) and the wait on a special order, plus lack of replacement tyres meant we gave that option away. We ended up going with 5 x 225/75r15 Kenda KR28 Klever AT's. These aren't as aggressive looking as the Hercules, but they should be fine. We paid $750 for all 5 including fitting, balancing and a wheel alignment in Moorooka, Brisbane. The wheel alignment is usually $65 for the exy, so I guess this makes the tyres $137ea. With a spring lift, the tyres fill the guards nicely and everything ran very well on a trip up to Harry's Hut last weekend (loaded up with 3 nights worth of camping gear and supplies, plus a canoe up top). The last half hour or so off road wasn't exactly intense, but with a night of rain before we headed home, we had a bit of fun and I was very pleased with how everything handled. These tyres are also surprisingly quiet on the bitumen. If you listen for it, there is some noise at around 60kph, but on the highway we didn't even notice them! So I guess here's another option for people looking for reasonable quality cheap tyres. If I remember, I'll update how they're performing sometime down the track. At less than 65% the fitted price of big brand tyres, we've only got to get past ~50000km to be ahead (assuming we'd easily get to 80000km on a big money set).nondisclosed_email@example.com (JKS)Wed, 02 May 2012 12:42:48 +0000 Re: sub $200 tyreshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2060487,from=rss#post2060487https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2060487,from=rss#post2060487quote:bnm75 wrote: GeoffM - I found the "Maxtour" GT Radials for $150 each in the 215/65R16 for the Ti alloys in my little hamlet just outside Cairns. They are reaching the 20,000km mark. I have to say that these tyres have out performed my expectations. Cheap yet good enough. Over two years, I had one puncture and $15 fix lasted until today with not further problem. Pressure check at petrol station done only once every 8 months or so. These tyres still have some 85% to go. Noise is as good as the original Bridgestones. Wet performance is just a notch below Bridgestone but the amount of speed camera in Victoria keep me staying within speed limt most of the time which would not make any difference between Kumho and Bridgestone.
