All it does is prevents a good engine getting clagged up with oil.

This is all that we were trying to do Andrew after seeing the amount of oil inside the manifold when Jalal, Noel & Brett fitted their TBS.

Re: Oil Catch Cans

I've noticed this as well. I have a scope for looking down manifolds and stuff and noticed an amount of oil in my manifold. Considering I've only done 15,000kms, I must say I'm a bit perplexed!

Either one of 3 things in the QR25DE design. The splash plate from the PCV is not up to the job, the PCV is not up to the job or this is the way Nissan reduce polutants (crappy way of doing it)

I'm going to pop a oil trap in line wit the PCV to manifold to see what sort of quantities we are talking about for the next couple of months. If it is excessive I'll let you all know.

Either way Andrew, I think it would be worth posting anything on oil amounts caught, manifold cleanliness, engine running changes, etc you find as we are all learning about this part of our QR25DE engine.

Re: Oil Catch Cans

ModYourCar.com.au has oil catch cans from $89 - $189 depending on make and size.

Fitting should be relatively easy as it connects inplace of the vacuum hose which connects between the rocker cover and the intake manifold, being able to be screwed or bolted almost anywhere in the engine bay within reach of the piping.

Noel posted some pics on the first page of this thread and with Andrew is going to do a test soon I'm sure he will post pics of his install as well.

Re: Oil Catch Cans

Interesting topic guys: from my experience I would think that the blow by oil from an NA engine especially a Nissan engine would be very minimal particularly if it is serviced at the correct intervals.

I run a catch can on my 200sx mainly to stop oil film building up in the FMIC which can affect cooling. Its running 15 psi boost with other mods and after a year I inspected the can and found only a small trace of oil.

If you decide to put one on don't have one that vents to the atmosphere as it is illegal and it affects your A/F ratio. emoticon

Phil, there is still a fair amount of gunk that can build-up in the intake. Here is what I had in mine (regularly serviced exy)

Re: Oil Catch Cans

Jalal I did the same thing to my throtle body/plenum and was so concerned with the oily film inside that I asked the tech gurus on the forums would it affect the performance of my car.
Their response was it would have no bearing on the running of the vehicle and as it was only oil vapour it looked worse than it was. They considered that a percentage would be injested into the engine and that even over time it would still be only an oily film not ending up as a tarry substance on your throtle body etc. Most of them agreed that if I was doing track work they would be a good idea.

If you put one on I'm keen to hear how much blow by you get on the X Trail.

I think that if I put one on Kerri's car Nissan might void the warrenty emoticon

Cheers Phil emoticon

Re: Oil Catch Cans

Phil,

I am not sure about the impacts in terms of warranty but can't see this mod being any more serious than a CAI which Nissan don't mind.

If I decide to put one of these gadgets in my engine bay, it'll be to try and reduce the accumulation of that gunk as much as possible. I don't think it has any impact on performance of the car, but it is better for the engine in the long run.
