posticon Burnt out clutch!

I was towing about 1000kg when I had to reverse uphill. Had a few manouvering issues and it was a trailer with brakes, and I think the brakes were being activated.

Anyway, to cut a long painful story short, I had to ride the clutch for far too long to move the load when I noticed the horrible burning smell and smoke coming up from the engine bag. Killed the engine and noticed that the clutch pedal wouldn't release all the way up, nor would it engage when I pushed all the way in. I let it cool down and after a few minutes the clutch came back to life.

Now the clutch seems to slip a little when I let it out. Anyone have any advice on what I should do and how to test if my clutch needs to be replaced?

if the clutch is sliping when you let it out it will need to be replaced because it will get worse. If it gets realy bad you will notice power loss and terrible fuel economy

Re: Burnt out clutch!

Not sure if this is a clutch on the way out, but just got back from a quick spin in a mates exy (non member..YET) and when he changes gears, the revs appeared to rise and then fall back when the clutch engaged. I told him that his clutch could be on the way out, as he tows a boat most days. Anyone else experienced this.

Scenario: Revs sitting at 3500, 100kph in 4th gear, change to 5th, revs rise to about 4000 and then fall back down to under 3000. It only appeared to happen when he was pushing it, not cruising around.

Brett,

Did you drive your mates exy or was your mate driving?

Sounds like a driver problem to me with not releasing the accelerator early enough when changing gears.

Re: Burnt out clutch!

After a few days of driving, the clutch seems to be a little more stable. I've done the 5th gear and handbrake on test and the clutch seems to hold and cuts the engine. Still have that strong burning smell lingering around though, gotta figure out how to get rid of it.

I'm thinking of taking it to Nissan to have it looked at, but I'm not really prepared to fork out $3000 for it be replaced, it's only 20,000 km's old!
