Malfunction Indicator (Dashboard Engine Warning Light)

After rewiring my driving looms late yesterday, I have noticed that the orange 'engine' light (Malfunction Indicator Light) stays on when I start/drive the car. Has anyone else experienced this.

I did have the battery disconnected for a short time, the radio is fine, but the speedo and time reset. I have tried removing the three 'engine management fuses', with no difference.

The manual suggests that there may be water in the fuel filter, but only on a diesel.

I contacted Nissan and they can't fit me in until the New Year.

 Any help is appreciated.

Admin: Spelling mistake in the subject title fixed

Re: Malfunction Indictor (dashboard engine light)

I had my engine warning light come on a while back when I was fiddling with my MAF sensor.

There is no way to get that light to go out and only nissan can turn it off for you.

Nissan will also be able to indicate the cause of the fault.

Noel,
What was the cause of your error and what did Nissan charge you.

Re: Malfunction Indictor (dashboard engine light)

I may have fixed my problems and saved some $$ $ by keeping it away from Nissan. I found a top little cheat sheet explaining the ECU error codes which relates to our QR25DE engine. They have an excellent method of working out the error code and possibly the required fix.

See the pdf version of it HERE

Well, it works and mine showed that there was an open circuit at the IAT (MAF) sensor. Then I remembered my daughter turning the ignition to the ON position, when I had that cable disconnected (thus the open circuit).

It even shows you how to clear the error codes. It did take 3 attempts to get it going, but it works as described. You have to spot-on with your counting.

I'll still let Nissan look it over in the New Year, as my fuel intake recall notification just came through.

It wont let me attach the information due to the size. I will send it to you Jalal

Admin Edit: pdf file hosted locally on our forum and added to this post as requested

Re: Malfunction Indictor (dashboard engine light)

The cause of my error was one of stupidity as I attempted to install a mod from eBay, which involved removing the MAF wiring plug and shorting out the terminals with a resistor. My engine warning light came on immediately and didn’t go out.

I brought my exy into Nissan and put it in under warranty. They didn’t charge me anything. They indicated that the MAF sensor was the problem, which to them was a bit unusual as the sensor was still in good working order. emoticon

Re: Malfunction Indicator (dashboard engine light)

Hi Brett,

I have created a pdf file from that cheat sheets you sent me and it is now hosted locally within our forum. I will soon be linking this file to be part of our DIY Guides as it is quite useful for those of us who don't have the ECU reader software and hardware.

I take back my words from a few days ago....

I was tinkering with my Cold Air Intake last night and accidentally started my exy with the MAF sensor unplugged, Engine Warning light came on straight away, emoticon

I've tried out the procedure you found and can say it works a treat. It even gave me back the correct error code and I have now cleared the trouble codes from the ECM, all back to normal again emoticonemoticonemoticon

Re: Malfunction Indicator (Dashboard Engine Warning Light)

I had same problem and after consulting user manual and getting no indication of nature of problem, took it to my local Nissan dealer fearful of an expensive repair.

Despite mention earlier in this thread of "interpreting ECU error codes", the Nissan Service advisor said he recalled that the "Engine malfunction" indicator is typically triggered by a blown brake light fuse (particularly if you've been towing a trailer with lights).

I thought it odd that a warning light as dire-sounding as "Engine malfunction" should "normally" be caused by something so trivial as a fuse but he took a look at the vehicle in the service drive and sure enough, blown fuse.

I was suitably impressed $1 later I was on my way with brake lights functioning and no malfunction light.

Hope this helps someone
Cheers - Craig

Re: Malfunction Indicator (Dashboard Engine Warning Light)

I am not sure about that Craig, as I had a blown brake light fuse before and didn't get the MIL light.

There is a quick way to verify the dealers theory if you remove the brake light fuse emoticon

Re: Malfunction Indicator (Dashboard Engine Warning Light)

I had a problem a couple of times today.
The first time I had driven to work & was going to move the car after a short stop & it wouldn't start. I've had this a few times previously usually starting from cold in the morning. I tried a couple of times then depressed the accelerator, released and tried again & away she went.
Then coming home I pulled up at an intersection & am not sure if the car stalled or I stalled it by not being quick enough with the clutch. Again after a try or two with no result I depressed the accelerator & let go & she started again. But, then I noticed that the yellow engine light on the dash was on & stayed on the rest of the way home.

Any ideas? The car seems to run no different than before except for the light.
