Re: Head gasket blown

It was my mechanic who was speaking to them, they also mentioned the casting sand as a possible cause. He didn't elaborate any more than that. The local dealer was Von Bibra Nissan, but it's now changed hands to Motors Nissan in Launceston, Tas.

Next time I speak to the mechanic i'll ask him if they gave any details about the why the went.

Re: Head gasket blown

Casting Sand in the coolant sytem.
Although this way out of the ordinary.. (I have never come across a blown head gasket caused by a radiator that has been blocked by casting sand in 20 years of repairing heads) ... it cannot be discounted.
Casting sand lodged in the head of block usually takes the form of solid clumps that have not been flushed out during the manufacturing process. Anything else is usually flushed away. It may be possible for this to be dislodged and cause a restriction to coolant flow into the radiator.
If the radiator was to become blocked by this, it should have given you ample warning by the obvious increase of engine temperature. Did the temp gauge give any indication of this?
BTW.. if this is proved it may still be possible to make a claim against Nissan.
A manufacturing fault is just THAT. Thats why you dont pay for recalls. You will need to the legal option.
Please keep us updated.

Re: Head gasket blown

I have been in contact with Nissan Aust and while they have heard of a few blown head gaskets no one has mentioned casting sand being the problem but as the conversation whent on and i mentioned this forum and some of the other complaints, they think that at the 80k service the coolant is drained and replaced and maybe something happens at this time but nothing definate, so know they want a report from the mechanic to see if i have a claim or not under manufactures fault, so the report is tomorrows project
perhaps a few others might like to start contacting Nissan

Re: Head gasket blown

Just picked up the report from the radiator place and here is a quote from same " Radiator was blocked with a combination of casting sand from the engine and silica gell dropout from coolant which builds up in cold spots in the radiator"
Cold spots in the radiator a new one on me but thats in the report, also silica dropout does this mean that also the coolant is faulty,
its way above me

Re: Head gasket blown

Cooling system flush couldn't hurt if it is indeed an issue.

I've got the exy back now, and $1100 later (and almost 3 weeks 8( later) all is well again. Unfortunately no word on the cause though. I need to follow up with the mechanic again to find out. Also, I entered the wrong code 3 times into the radio and now I only get err message. I thought it was supposed to go away after an hour so you can re enter it. does it need to be on for a full hour for this to happen? I tried disconecting the battery for 10 minutes but that didn't work, maybe I need to have it disconected for longer?

It needs to be on for the full hour. Drive around with it on and then try the code again.

Re: Head gasket blown

Considering it's about a 7 minute drive from home to work, that's gunna take me some time. Maybe I need to go for a drive on the weekend, or leave the battery disconnected for longer
