Clicking in the rear wheels ?

Noticed a strange noise at the rear of the exy that has me stumped. When slowing to a stop, there is a clicking noise coming from the rear wheels. Doesn't sound like the diff, but not sure. The clicks are about 1 per second, but it only lasts between 3 and 5 seconds (until I stop).

It only happens when braking. When I roll to a stop, there is no noise. I walked next to the exy with the wife inside and it sounds like a metallic noise. Brakes have only done 15,000km.

 Any help is appreciated.

Re: Clicking in the rear wheels ?

I wonder if its caused by a small amount of sideways movement of the pads when they first grab. If your new pads are not standard they may be very slightly different in size compared to the original.

I cannot think of any other likely cause if everything is tight. I think there are products available to put on between pads and their holders (gooey stuff) that might help, although I think they are meant to stop braking squeaks.

Just my tuppence worth!

Re: Clicking in the rear wheels ?

i had a clicking from the rear.. id get two clicks.. i think it ended up being the anti-squeal shims on the rear pads moving when i broke. it would only do it on the first application of the brakes when driving in a diff direction... eg:

drive forward and brake - no noise...
then reverse and brake - click click..
then forward and brake - click click..

it would also happen after id applied the brakes on an uphill slope whilst rolling back.. then id drive forward and first application - click click.

i assume its the antisqueal shims moving on the rear pads.

i replaced the pads and used some anti-squeal goop on both sides of the shims and it stopped the clicking problem...

but if you are getting constant clicking for three to five seconds every time you brake i dont think that could be the case?

Brett,

I agree with tia and this is exactly the clicking noise I get.

Other than that, make sure you have applied plenty of grease to the shims when you changed the brake pads, as the locking pins might be touching the surface of the disk.

Re: Clicking in the rear wheels ?

Thanks guys for the responses. Sorry for the delay. Been studying at the Academy for a couple of weeks. I have a set of green pads on order, so I'll look at the shims then.

Re: Clicking in the rear wheels ?

Exy's have noisey brakes! (There, I've hung out the bait..hehehe) I noticed from the day I bought the car a rattle in the rear brakes.

I pulled apart the rear and shims didn't have enough anti-rattle paste on them. After I put some goo on, they were fine.
(Well at least for a while)
