posticon DEAD/BROKEN LINKS all over the place

Hi Guys,

As some of you may have already noticed we have dead links and links that are coming-up with an error saying "No Such Page Exists!"

This is also the case with any link that is coming-up in the site search engine.

This is a result of very poorly planned upgrade by Runboard Staff where they have decided to change the structure of all boards to have shorter URLs which would improve page load time and response times when you make a post.

Unfortunately, the script they have used only captured and updated the threads in each of the forum, but it didn't capture any links that have been posted inside a post.

As a result we (Noel and I) will have a Major task on our hands to try and clean-up as many dead links as possible and we will start doing that with the DIY Guides which is a very important source of information to all.

Please be patient as we do this as it is going to take us a while to update all dead links and we will be doing so as we go along.

I'm extremely disappointed by the way this upgrade was conducted and I have voiced my disappointment with Runboard.

Thank you for the understanding and support.

P.S. The site search should be pick-up and index the newly structured URL links and threads this coming Sunday (fingers crossed)

Isn't there a way that you (or a program) could keep track of which posts have links to other threads in them, and automatically generate a table or database of them to make it easier to update them (who's going to guarantee it wont happen again?!)

Re: DEAD/BROKEN LINKS all over the place

Hi Rich,

The script they used for this upgrade did not capture any of the internal link that have been posted within the threads which is what will cause us pain the most.

The only way to do that is manually as confirmed by ccwf (the guru of Runboard) and Support Staff.

This is un-avoidable pain all boards have to go through just this ones time.

It is a one off upgrade and it won't happen again.

The reasons behind this upgrade explained HERE

I have nearly finished the DIY Guides section and finished the sticky topics with newbies guides...etc

How you (members) can help? If you come across any broken internal link when you make posts on the forum, please email us (admin team) the link to that post and we'll fix it.

We will do our best to capture as many broken links as we can, but I am sure we will miss some of them, so your help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: DEAD/BROKEN LINKS now fixed

Dear Members,

I have now updated ALL broken links in the DIY Guides thread and every sticky topic thread in every sub-forum section.

I have also successfully indexed the forum from scratch and the search engine is now working fine and pointing to the newly structured URL links.

I have not started updating the broken links inside each post made on the forum, as this will be impossible to do and this where I need your help when you come across them.

Please note that only those URLs that link one post to another have been affected. No external links to your personal websites or any external website have been affected by this at all.

Thanks for your patience.

PLEASE REPORT ALL BROKEN LINKS TO mailto: admin@australianxtrail.com.au

Re: DEAD/BROKEN LINKS now fixed

Hi,

I am not sure how i can help here, but...

I have been spending quite few hours on the forum for the past couple of weeks. probably read thousands of posts.

as you have indicated no link works if the post is older then 6 ~8 months.

unfortunately very valuable information is lost.

just an idea.

do you have a back up of the old forum? may be we can import it or just post is as other forms, formats?

seriously reading trough the forum is frustrating when no link is working.

I dont think it is possible to email you all the broken links one by one either...

Why not? This is the only way we will be able to fix any dead links.

Having said that, we have no control over dead pics which members might have posted using a casual hosting service, as these do expire after a period of time.

The forum is hosted by Runboard on a server located in the US and is being backed-up everyday, however due to the structure change of Runboard (as explained above) none of the old posts structure will help us correct the dead links in terms of thread redirects. All board owners suffered from this and all of us are working slowly to correct these dead links when we get notified or when we see them first.
